If we're in the championship again this time next year having had a striker loaned out getting game time would give us an option.

Big target men do seem to peak late though.

I wonder whether Farke/Webber sees him as a bit of a project? And we're trying to change his game?

Godfrey has changed position, Pukki said he completely changed his game after flopping in the SPL, etc.

And target men do seem to peak later in their careers these days, look at Holt, Murray, Lambert etc reaching the Premier League in their late 20's.

Glenn Murray was Grant Holt's replacement at Rochdale when Holt was 25 and Murray was 22...

But it is probably just us taking a punt on him having a great season in League One and then being able to get £1m or something for him next summer? Plus a bit of an insurance policy against relegation? If he can bang in 15 for Rotherham this season then he could be a useful squad player for us the following season?

Should imagine its pretty low risk RE: doubt we've ever thrown big wages at him.

Also, what if currying favour with Norwich born Paul Warne by sending them Morris and Raggett this season might give us a bit of preferential treatment in any Will Vaulks and/or Semi Ajayi negotiations?

I said a few weeks ago that I think he'd be a decent option if the fee was sensible.

Personally I can't for the life of me think what Rhodes would offer us in the Premier League and I'm hoping we don't sign him, enjoyed having him but just outgrown him.

A one year loan as third striker is about as far as I'd be OK with, aren't we hoping to outgrow him even further over the next year?

He can't hold the ball up and has no pace. We're going to need to be good on the counter attack to win points next season and I can't see how a fox in the box who needs goals on a plate is going to work for us when we might get 1 or 2 chances in a lot of games.

Whereas Assombalonga has power and pace, even if he just comes on against tired legs most of the time he'll be an asset. And at 26 he's got a good 4 or 5 years left, and if it doesn't work out we'd be able to recoup the fee by selling to a top 6 Champs club.

He can hold the ball up tbf but that lack of pace has always been the problem for him.

Everyone knows he's on mega bucks but if he was prepared to come here for a lot less money and a sniff of Premier League football as a squad player then fine by me.

I know strikers are expensive but I'd honestly rather the club took a risk on Maupey for say £15m, knowing that we'd have to sell Aarons or Godfrey to pay for him if we go down (because we'd struggle to keep them in that event anyway).

If we could get Assombolonga for £10m I'd prefer that too.... he's 26 and at least has pace over short distances.

Dwight Gayle surely an option now that West Brom aren't going up? Not a great age at 29.

I was honestly thinking something along the lines of £2.5m and £20k a week for Rhodes to be a squad player on a max 3 year contract (taking us to the end of parachute payments if we go straight down, so not crippling us like Naismith and Jarvis). I hope and suspect that Webber is thinking along similar lines.

I wonder how much West Brom would want for Jay Rodriquez?

Kemar Roofe isn't very clinical but can run all day and is a good age, got one year left on his deal.... prob get him for £7m?

Paying big money for a 29 year old like Rhodes who is already past his peak = exactly what we did when we signed Naismith.

Tactics from Sheff Weds. Absolutely nobody is paying that money for him. They want him off the wage bill but they're going to try to make it look like they hold all the cards.

from what I can tell the clause in his loan contract is for £7m, so if we want to sign him that's what it'd cost, but as his loan deal expires on 30th June officially (i think),we maybe able to negotiate a lower fee after that date, wouldn't really want to go above £5m for him though

That sounds way too high to be honest.

I just think that unless he is practically free and his salary upon relegation is no higher than we paid him this past season then its just not worth it.

We need genuine competition for Pukki and Rhodes can only ever be a squad player / option from the bench.

Guarantee that if we stay up this coming season we'd end up subsidising him to play somewhere else the season after.

Would need to be ridiculously cheap to justify giving him a permanent deal for 3 years. I think even £2.5m is high.... Sheffield Wednesday have FFP issues, no other team is going to give them £5m for him.

We'll take him off their wage bill and give them £1m as a gesture of goodwill with Rhodes taking a bit of a pay cut again so he can live where his wife (suffolk born and raised) can be happy.

He'll be a backup player who will be seldom used and the cost should be proportionate to that. For £5m we'll get a good striker from the continent, French second division or something.

Sort of already feels like we're allowing sentiment to cloud our judgement a little here. With the way our style of football developed he's only really been useful as a plan B for the final 10/15 for most of the season. I mean... if we want a player to do that then he's a better option than Srberny.

But feels like we're about to give a 3 year contract to somebody to do a job as a squad player for 1 year. Perhaps the only justification we can give is that he's an insurance policy against relegation, at which point Pukki would be off.

In fact if I were Jordan Rhodes I'd be asking myself whether I was really prepared to make 10 sub appearances next year just to say you'd played in the Premier League, when he could wind down his big contract at Sheffield Wednesday and then go and become a hero again at Blackburn and replace the ageing Danny Graham or something.

The backup player at Norwich thing would pay more than Blackburn you'd think, but he could probably go and score another 50+ goals at somewhere like that.
