Starting XI for Wolves

the issue with respect to RVW was never the old 'one up front' routine. The issue was not creating overloads on the flanks to get the diagonals into key areas for him to attack because Hughton was too restrictive with respect to his full-backs. RVW can and should be played up front on his own.

Whittaker
Yes, he is our best right-back. Martin will play at centre-back as he has been given number 5 which is highly indicative of the plan for him. Russell Martin is a limited player and I hope if he is as shaky at CB this season as he was last (I think he'll get away with it in the Championship) that Adams has the cojones to drop him for Bennett as Arsenal did with Vermaelen despite being captain.

lol, it was supposed to be a team there, but I accidentally submitted before I'd got started. Thank God this forum has an edit function! Although obviously Whittaker is a one-man army and we don't really need anybody else on the pitch...

Hahaha, oh, i thought you were pointing out that the previous poster had not included Whittaker. He's a shoe-in to start at right back. Aylsham Canary who just mooted a 5-4-1....that's way too top light and Redmond lacks the vision to play at AM....we won't need 5 at the back with very few Championship sides THAT good at finding passes between the lines. I think in terms of what Adams WILL do it'll probably be a diamond, with Wes very much the focal point of our attack.

In terms of what he should do, the 4-3-3 I previously mentioned would strongly utilise the talented wingers we possess and also get the best out of the box to box abilities of Howson and Fer. The amount of strikers we have retained, though, lends itself to two up front, and Adams comments on Hoolahan suggest we're very likely to see Wes behind any two from Grabban, Lafferty, Loza, RvW, and Hooper. if Adams really is going full Lambert on us though, expect Lafferty and Grabban to start against Wolves in a Holt/Jackson defensive forward - defensive line attacking pair.

I think Grabban and Laferty will start at Wolves, in front of the diamond of Wes, Redmond, Benno and Johnson.

Defence picks itself.

Wouldn't be surprised if we start Redmond up front, or at least central.

Redmond could play up front in the Championship but it would need to be off a proper strike partner like Lafferty. Would also guard against Nathan's poor defending.

Adams seems to like Redmond up front and it would be great to have him up there on the break if nothing else. Personally with so many strikers still at the club I would bench Redmond if we aren't playing wingers in the particular situation.

I really hope people stop putting strikers or wingers in the hole behind the strikers. To play there you need to have a specialist skill set based around being able to turn in tight spaces, quick feet and good vision. Have a think about whether the player you want to put there has that, then if he doesn't, don't do it.

'Oh we should play Pilks, Snodgrass, Redmond, Lafferty in the hole'

No.

I personally think that the diamond will be our go to formation this season.  Extremely dynamic and flexible with who is played in what position.  Come out of the gate quickly and show the Championship we mean business.

Ruddy
Whittaker   Martin   Turner   Olsson
Johnson
Redmond               Surman
Hoolahan
Lafferty   Hooper

Subs: Rudd, R. Bennett, E. Bennett, Pilkington, Tettey, Murphy, Grabban

Nah, i agree with the diamond but Redmond and Surman do not offer enough defensive protection. Johnson/ Tettey must feature with one of Fer or Howson if the diamond is to be successful in the championship. We cannot be as expansive as we were against Nice, we will get destroyed through the middle on the break. Just because Hughton isn't our manager doesn't mean you disregard the defensive side of the game.

          Tettey/BJ

           Howson/Fer  Surman

           Hoolahan

You could also play Howson or Fer at LCM and have Bennett or Redmond as the other CM but two players capable of ball winning is a necessity in a midfield diamond.

I agree with the importance of ball winners and COTW's options look good in that regard. Surman seems a natural on the left and links very well with Wes. I think it'll be Grabban and Lafferty up front.

Good point COTW.  I haven't been able to watch any of the preseason matches, so I am going off of results and highlights. Maybe Redmond could play up front and Fer/Howson could play in the center.  Whatever way the midfield shakes out to be, I think Redmond and Wes should be on the pitch to create a nightmare situation of speed and creativeness respectively.  But again, I am going off of what I have seen in the past and highlights of this preseason.

Though I wasn't at the Nice match, Redmond looked very good playing up front with Grabban. I wonder if that is a possibility for the future, Thierry Henry style. Just a thought.
