Perhaps its more a case of cashing in and putting the money to good use rather than necessarily wanting the player out of the door

I can only assume some people mean on loan with some of the younger players. 

Whittaker's popularity still pretty low despite being one of our best players last season.

Whittaker is clearly a talented footballer, but his lack of pace worries me in the Prem. He was exposed quite a few times last time and will only have got slower. He's great pushing on like Russ is when we're on top, but thats not going to be that often in the Prem. He could be a good option at right midfield I think if you want a more solid right flank than Redmond will give you (against Man City for instance), but personally I think we need someone at rightback with more pace. I certainly dont think Whittaker isnt a good footballer though

All attacking fullbacks get caught out sometimes. He's not slow but I do think that a lightning quick right back would be a good signing for those days he has a total mismatch. Most games he should be fine though.

I wonder if we might already have the pacey RB for those situations in Elliot Bennett. IMO, he's looked good whenever he's played there. There's been a lot of talk about Yedlin, but he is also a RW turned RB, so is his defending any better than EB's? It'd be a shame to waste a squad place on someone else's player if he isn't.

As for the poll, a lot of people seem to making snap judgements about players like Tony Andreu and Ignasi Miquel simply because they haven't seen enough of them. If AN thinks they can do the job, they'll stay, if not, they won't.

It's one of those things I wanted to see in the Champs but wouldn't fancy in the Premier League. Honestly think he'll move on next summer if we stay up..

My question was, indirectly, how do we know Yedlin would be any better than EB as a defender. They both have pace, EB is far more experienced, but I just don't know about Yedlin's defending, having been converted from RW and only being 21. Is the difference is great enough to warrant taking up a squad place just for dealing with pacey wingers? AN has said that he isn't keen on developing other team's players through the loan system when we have similar players of our own.

Yedlin has experience of playing the position internationally and in the MLS. He's much faster then Bennett and more agile. His positioning isn't great but he uses the pace to make up for it. Similar to a lot of fullbacks nowadays he'd be better gong forward than going back but that's just the game now.

I don't think Bennett has looked the same player since his injuries, and even in his first season with us I thought he was a squad player at best. A full summer's training might prove me wrong but his touch and pace didn't seem all there in his fleeting appearances last season.

Agreed, but I think he has the right set of attributes and would like to see more of him there. Championship would have been the better opportunity. He's not shown enough flair really to be a real option at right wing, but he could have a future at rightback. Its all supposition of course though

If we hadn't gone up I would've liked to have seen Elliott Bennett given a shot at right-back. But it's far too much of a gamble to try and mould him into a full-back this season. Whilst I think we're in need of a new right back, I'd rather we went with Whittaker/Martin for the season than give Bennett a chance there.

I do like Bennett though, and I'd like us to keep him as a back-up right winger for Redmond.
