Stephen Fry has spent years speaking out about the stigma attached to mental health problems like bipolar, which he suffers from.

Now he's telling people who struggle to overcome problems associated with childhood sexual abuse to "grow up". 

The suicide rate amongst people who were sexually abused as children is massively higher than those who were not. 

Sorry I can't agree with your assessment that he was right to say that at all.

I'm just glad that the media haven't got the opportunity to link his comments to our club in light of recent harassment of Adam Johnson's victim, that would have been bad timing.

I don't really see how you can consider the comments acceptable to be honest, but each to their own I suppose. 

I agree with Piers Morgan that people should probably be worried about Fry's current mental health. 

I know that the word has gone PC mad, we're living in the real 1984, and the thought police are ready to jump on people at the slightest slip up, but I'd have expected him to have apologised or at least expanded on his comments by now.

I agree that it's probably more of a sign that Fry's mental health is declining, which is really sad to see.

He's bipolar so probably having an episode or changed his med's or something, or drinking alcohol with his meds, that screws them up. 

It was only a couple of months ago that I watched a documentary in which Fry was tackling the issue of the stigma associated with bipolar disorder, and its not the first time he's made a TV show on the issue of mental health and people being stigmatised. Now he is saying this:

“Self pity is the ugliest emotion in humanity. Get rid of it, because no one’s going to like you if you feel sorry for yourself. The irony is we’ll feel sorry for you, if you stop feeling sorry for yourself. Grow up.”

Now, if you say that to somebody suffering from depression or manic depression, then surely that comment would be the epitome of mental health being stigmatized.

Anyway, the main thing is that the media haven't got the option to write "Norwich City director tells child abuse victims to get over themselves", on the same day they report on Adam Johnson launching an appeal, and 3 days before we play Sunderland...
