Story of a match

Hi everybody, I am considering doing a blog for next season. 

I have attempted to write an analysis along the lines of the 'Story of a Match' blogs that the guy from Holtamania used to do. Its very rough around the edges but I hope you enjoy it and constructive criticism will be welcome.

Well written and an enjoyable read. Certainly gives a different perspective. 

You have given yourself a bit of a task for next season but I for one will look forward to reading it. 

There will probably be those that challenge your technical nous and analysis, very likely on another forum, but I think that would be to miss the point. It does not matter if you are concentrating on the right tactical issues (although hopefully you may) what it does is to make us think on the game in a different way rather than reflect on the game with views based on gut reactions typically to key incidents. Albeit the latter will still happen in the immediate aftermath of the game.

Not sure what the purpose of your first link is?

Having a level-headed analysis to read after the game could be very handy for me next season, as when we lose I instantly fly into 'we were robbed/the ref supports them/the whole world is against us/sack the manager' mode  :unsure:

Thanks for your kind words. I used to enjoy reading the tactical analyses that used to be on Holtamania, so simply trying to replicate something interesting to read. 

I hope not to offer definitive tactical analysis, but to simply spark debate and discussion about what seemed to work for and against us in matches. As I say, people putting across a different interpretation is actually hoped for - Im not proclaiming my version of events to be definitive - just a fans interpretation no more expert than anyone elses!

I hope to enjoy writing it and hope it will add an element to the way I watch our games and I hope anyone who reads it finds it an interesting read

I wasnt quite sure how to link to my home-page - I have two posts - one an opening statement on what I hoped to do, the second the actual analysis.

Great read! I've thought about doing similar but it takes a lot of time to properly analyse a game like that so fair play. It really shows where we need new players and what works well for us as well.

The thing I find to be our greatest challenge will be that we've recently built our team around Wes with Redmond and Jerome/ Grabban able to stretch the defences to give Wes the room to work. We will obviously be looking to find the new Wes/ find a player similar to him that scores more as well and this will prove very difficult to find, so difficult in fact that we might have to try rework our style of football.

It was evident Hughton tried to do this but got stuck between wanting to build an exciting attack and not being able to find the right ingredients so as the season wore on, he got more compact (boring) and we simply didn't have the firepower to go for the counter attacking 1-0's he wanted.

Fact is, Wes in the championship with us in the final third a lot can weave a lot of magic. He isn't as effective when he's forced to be more withdrawn which is why we'll need a new tactic for the premiership with Wes used as a sub or in games where we feel we can gain some decent territory.

Not sure if we will go for a withdrawn target man again (like we tried with Elmander) where we might go for Michu or whoever or if we go for a tricky, fleet footed player in the hole or the combo of both (Vadis was brought in to replace Fer as this guy).

It'll be interesting to see what AN conjures up!
