Premier League/EFL May 17 to August 9
EFL clubs will have to make all their permanent signings by 5pm on Thursday, August 9 – although they will still be permitted to sell players and sign loans until the end of the month.

Wes has apparently been contacted by Steven Gerrard with a view to playing for Rangers, be a good move for him at this stage of his career, not sure I could deal with seeing him play in a blue shirt though

I'm not entirely on board with the stated line from the Club that our transfer business will be affected in a big way by the World Cup. In fact, I find myself getting a bit annoyed about it.

I'm not privileged to any confidential information and I'm not ITK, but I'm willing to bet my house on us NOT signing a player who is featuring in the business end of the World Cup.
You might perhaps, be able to point to a rather obscure, little known player from the smallest nations at the tournament, but really, is it going to affect our intended targets or any of our players leaving?

Especially if we consider that we no longer have a "European Scout" following his departure to the mighty Cambridge United.

This window, we need clear quick action, not excuses

Its like a house chain though Number 9..... Man Utd buy a player from Spurs, who replace him with a player from Leicester, who replace him with a player from Swansea, who replace him with a player from Derby, who replace him with a player from Norwich.

That's unfortunately how far down the chain we are now, perhaps we were at "Swansea" level a few years ago.

So it probably does have an effect.... in the sense that we need Liverpool to lose Firmino, and then replace with Mahrez, who is then replaced by Maddison etc (lazy example, although the Mahrez replaced by Maddison thing is a possibility).

I understand the process, what I don't get, is that the players leaving us are not realistically big time or serious money players for premier league clubs. Yep Madders has carried us this past seas but won't be the messiah for where he's going, probably just a squad player.
The players we buy in, too, not coming from any tournament in Russia.

I think the general point is that transfer business just tends to be done later in World Cup years.... and there's probably some truth in it.

What if Benteke is hoping to have a good World Cup so he can get a move away from Palace.... Palace get say £20m for him (poor season this year).... they replace him with Vydra from Derby for £14m.... Derby make a £7m bid for Oliviera?

The World Cup definitely effects things in the Premier League, and that will then have a knock on effect to the Championship?

But Webber is probably just trying to disguise the fact that we aren't going to be doing much business until we can cash in on Maddison, which instead of being June will probably be late July now.... that's the real reason our summer has been messed up. But he can't exactly come out and say that, because you'll drive down the price if you make it clear you are desperate to sell.

If we're planning on signing more players from Germany then some non-homegrown players are going to have to leave?

McLean doesn't count towards the quota.

I suspect this means Russell Martin will be kept around for his final season as a squad filler, to sit on the bench occasionally to tick a quota box. Not that anybody would want him anyway.

McGovern isn't homegrown so makes sense to pay him off and bring in another English keeper to compete with Matthews, because that means 2 homegrown players each week just from the keepers.

Jed Steer would make sense to me if the fee is less than £1m... done alright at this level out on loan and impressed for Villa in cup games. I think there is actually also a requirement to have 1 player who came through at your club in the squad also.... got several at the minute... Murphy, Lewis and Matthews.... but can't do any harm to have another.

Can't see any way back for Wildschut if we are needing to pad the squad with new homegrown players. Shame because he's clearly better than Watkins.

Husband, Murphy, Watkins, Jarvis, Matthews, Raggett, Maddison, Lewis, Martin, Hanley, Godfrey, Thompson, Morris, Cantwell are all homegrown...

.... that's 14, and we only need 8 in a matchday 18.... but 2 are perpetually injured, 2 or 3 are completely sh*te, 1 is going to be sold and at least 1 could probably do with another loan. Not an inspiring bunch as a collective.

Suspect we'll see several young English players on loan again to meet the quota?

If we need Husband for the quota then that may put Stieppermans future in doubt. If I had to choose 1 of our 3 left backs to discard it would be Husband, but it may be the wrong window for that.

Then you've got the complication of wanting to snap Bristol City's hand off for the seven figures they are willing to pay for Marley Watkins, but possibly having to keep him to sit on the bench. Its a complicated window.
