Matthews is 10 years younger, he's from Gorleston so I don't know this for a fact but I'm assuming he's a Norwich fan. Even if he isn't growing up in Norfolk means he'll have a connection to the club, and is probably desperate for the chance to be 1st choice here. None of that means he's neccesarily a better goalkeeper admittedly, but based on those reasons and what I've seen of McGovern, I'd rather give him a chance.
Plus Matthews was superb last season on loan at Plymouth, something McGovern has never shown any sign of being.

This is all to be back-up 'keeper anyway. Hopefully Krul proves to be a brilliant bit of business and we don't need to rely on Matthews or McGovern.

No idea, but my gut says that McGovern would be crap in League One too and Remi seems to have done alright in that league.
But I do know that McGovern actually spent most of his career in the second tier of Scottish football and not the top tier... if we want to talk about levels! What level is that? Conference National? Because that's what he looked like in his 20 appearances here, a conference keeper.
Not too inspired by Krul as he must surely have had some sort of Fraser Forster style loss of confidence at some stage, but the bloke is an 8 time Dutch International and has played over 150 Premier League games. It could be a Ruddy style revival, he obviously needed a platform and he got one at Wolves.
Would probably rather us actually sign John Ruddy though!

Same happens in every major tournament..... a small team punches above its weight, a load of manages think there are bargains to be had, then they flop and return to their previous level.
He didn't suddenly become good at 30 after having had no recognition ever as a good player.... if he'd been any good he'd have been playing for Celtic or Rangers wouldn't he, or at least Hibs, Hearts or Aberdeen.... they'd all seen him play for years presumably?
Didn't Gerrard Houillier spend a ridiculous amount of money on Senegal players one summer.... and El Hadji Diouf was alright but a mental case, and the rest were a disaster? Something along those lines.
ps. Michael McGovern didn't even get called up to the last Northern Ireland squad, which is quite an achievement considering last season they called up a 40 something year old keeper who retired 5 years ago because they have so few keepers. And he didn't win his first cap until 2015, so it looks like a short international career. Looks like he last cap was in 2017..... so he was basically the Northern Ireland keeper for 2 calendar years.
They went with another SPL keeper (Motherwell) and two kids who have played 25 senior games between them (one for Falkirk). Can't say that its because he hasn't been playing regularly, because those to kids have barely played at all.
4 good games for Northern Ireland in a tournament was the pinnacle of his career, fair play to him.... but a few players from the Wales squad that reached the Semi's are playing the SPL, League One and even League Two..... one of them has just signed for Forest Green Rovers.

Yup. I don't rate McGovern as being good enough (for anyone wanting to get promoted out of this league). But I don't think there's anything to suggest Remi is better.

I mean the thing with him isn't a lack of natural ability. It's how much injury has impacted on that. You have to assume they know he's plenty sharp enough again.

At Ajax he was behind one of the top rated young keepers in the sport though who came through at Barcelona and turned down Chelsea and Arsenal to join them....
.... and at Brighton he was behind ever-present Matthew Ryan who Brighton signed for a club record fee.
So I doubt not getting a kick at either of those sides is enough to suggest that he isn't good enough to be our keeper.
Who knows.... I doubt Krul was our top choice, more like third perhaps, but I'd bet every penny I have that he's better than Michael McGovern.

If that happens we're going to need another centre back in, as that only leaves us Hanley, Klose, Zimmerman and Martin, not to bad to have 4 in that position if you play 2 at the back, but if we plan on playing a back 3 again surely we need more cover, especially as it looks likely that Martin will either be shipped out or stay with the u23's, that is unless we have some young defender coming through the youth system that I don't know about

Godfrey will be seen as an emergency CB.
The ins and outs alongside pre season games suggests we will be primarily playing 4-1-4-1. Think that will disappoint some who feel we looked better with 3 CBs but I cant see us regularly playing it with the limited amount of Central Defenders at the club.
