On Raggett, I think as people have said we bought him with the intention of playing him this season, or at least having him as a squad member. If it didn't work out we sell him and recoup most of our money. A low risk signing. Have to say I think it's strange though that Farke doesn't even see him as good enough to be back-up. Apparently in pre-season he's been decent at doing the defensive stuff, but isn't particularly good on the ball, so Farke obviously doesn't want him maybe for that reason. If we had injuries and Raggett had to play, he would disrupt our playing out back from the style. It'll be interesting to see how he gets on at Rotherham.

I'm assuming now we'll sign a centre back, probably on loan for the season. I wonder whether we'll sign someone to come straight into the starting XI, leaving Zimmermann/Klose as back-up, or whether it'll be someone who will very clearly be back-up.

Godfrey I think will mainly be used as a defensive mid, but he would be a great option to slide into a back 3, which I think is something Farke will do this season, hence why Godfrey has played at centre back a few times in pre-season.

He played in a pre season friendly tonight, but to be honest, we seem to have a fair bit of competition in midfield, so I wouldn't be hugely surprised if he went out on loan again. Really only guessing though!

Yeah can't see Cantwell getting a chance here this season unfortunately. I think as well he'll probably be loaned out to somewhere else in England, probably a League 1 club, purely as he doesn't really have any experience of the English game.

To be fair though Fortuna Sittard are now in the Eredivisie could mean that we'd consider it, as the chance to play against the likes of Ajax and PSV would be good opportunities to show what he can do. I wouldn't be against it at all.

Thanks for the replies. So, just have to wait and see what happens I guess. Think that if Cantwell is allowed to leave, he'll jump at the chance of joining us again. He loved it here last season and everyone here loved him as a player. Tremendous workrate, stamina and ability. Will be a step up though for him this season, as we'll be playing in the top division this season. Do think he has the quality and mentality to make that step up.

Given our scouting policy of recruiting players to specifically fit the system / style we play, that makes no sense though. I assume they watched him play before we signed him.

The point I'm making though is that rather than use a scattergun approach to recruitment we specifically target players that fit into the style we play. So if someone went to scout him, the first question Herr Farke would ask is that is he good at playing the ball out of defence, as that is what I require of my CB's. With that position it is something that isn't really coached, you are either comfortable with the ball at your feet, or you are more of a "punt it into row Z" kinda guy! And it is perfectly acceptable to play one ball playing CB too, with the other one being more of a stopper.

Who knows, he has a recall clause for January I believe, maybe he'll be back, and Farke is obviously happy to use Godfrey there, if required., who had a great game at CB last night.

Agree with that. I vaguely remember that when Lincoln were on their Cup Run and all the interest in Raggett started weren't there one or two PL clubs sniffing about as well? I just wonder if it's his progression that hasn't really happened whether it be as 'stopper' or his 'feet'. Maybe the Rotherham loan is his last chance saloon with us to show he is to DF's standard..

hopefully he can get a decent run in the side, I'd like to think we can try and push on and challenge for a play off place this season, if not I'd hope we can at least look to develop some of our younger players, Godfrey, Thompson, Cantwell, would of said Matthews but don't see him getting much game time now other than cup games

It will be a tough season for us, no doubt about that. But I think we'll have a decent chance of staying up. Imo, there are 5 or 6 teams that fit more or less into the same category as us. Do think our scouting system and players network, provided by our owner, will give us an advantage.

Btw, isn't Cantwell into his last season with Norwich?

Well having seen him play 4 or 5 times theres been nothing to suggest he is a Ball Playing CB. So either we were looking past that, perhaps thinking higher level of coaching might bring that out of him, or the scouts got it wrong.

Like GJP says. Low risk, and that loan to Rotherham has probably near enough paid our outlay.

The thing is we will probably play 3 at the back quite a bit this season. I'm happy with our options but all we need is one injury and suddenly we'll be quite short in that area, and seeing how congested the Championship schedule can sometimes get, and how all 3 of our centre backs picked up the odd knock last season, I don't think getting another one in would do us any harm at all.

Like Kieffer Moore.... signed for £10k by Ipswich, loaned to Rotherham for half a season, and then sold to Barnsley in the Championship.... for what, £500k perhaps?

It was the reason Tottenham re-signed Simon Dawkins after 2 years out of the game injured and without a club after they released him, because they thought they could get him fit and then make some money on him. A couple of loan fees and a transfer fee later....

Aye if you watch the video of Webber in the other thread, it was agreed with Nelson that a change may be best for both parties, but there is no hard feelings, and Nelson understood that they would have to replace him, rather than wait and be short of strikers. Webber says he remains registered with a shirt number, and the door remains open. So, reading between the lines, they are struggling to offload him lol.
