I am writing this now, before the Blackburn game, just in case the wheels come off. After all we are Norwich - we are used to finding failure in the midst of success.
Two things give me hope for the season, whatever happens immediately:
1) Our strikers are all in form.
If you compare league goals scored and games played (I know that some appearances were shortened or were as substitute - if you want to compare goals scored with minutes on the pitch, look at www.whoscored.com.), the following results:
Hooper 9 goals in 17 games or 1.88 games per goal
Jerome 14 in 27 or 1.93 games per goal
Grabban 11 in 29 or 2.64
Johnson 8 in 28 or 3.58
Bennett (Ryan)1 in 4 or 4.00
Howson 4 in 18 or 4.50
There follows Redmond with 3 in 29 or 9.27 games per goal., and 8 others who have scored 1 or 2 goals in several games.
Even better, which I have not analysed, would be the ratios of goals to games over the last 8 games
2) Also revealing is our comparative position (compared to what it was when we languished round about 10th.
We have scored 62 goals in 32 games. Only Derby 66, Bournemouth 66 and Watford 63 have scored more.
We have conceded 36 in those 32 games. Only Middlesborough 22, Sheffield Wednesday 31, Derby 32, Ipswich 32 and Bournemouth 35 have conceded fewer.
Again, as a casual glance at our GD suggests, the last 8 games have shown a marked improvement
Over the season as a whole we have scored 62 goals and conceded 36, a ratio of 1.72 scored for each conceded.
Over the first 24 games we scored 44 and conceded 29, a ratio of 1.51
Over the past 8 games we have scored 18 and conceded 7, a ratio of 2.57( in the last 8 games we have played against Brentford,, Bournemouth, Wolves and Watford!)
We support a club which has seldom made things easy for itself, and we are perhaps permanently expecting the wheels to come off.What I am suggesting is that the new manager seems to have achieved courage, application, confidence and togetherness. We have three strikers who are all in form, ably supported by the midfield and a defence which seems to have overcome its tendency to give away goals. There is good reason for quiet confidence!
