That John Ruddy question.....

I was just reading some posts elsewhere, mass hysteria of course, but not so surprising after yesterdays shambles...... and was shocked to see an overwhelming majority calling for John Ruddy to be dropped.

Sure we leaked six yesterday, but i feel mainly down due to the wrong tactics and poor defending "as a team", plus other than one goal, where at the time I thought he could perhaps have done better (will need to see again to remember which), I didnt think he had a chance with any of them.

Also, I personally have no complaints about JR this season and felt that overall he was looking assured.

Consequently, I would be a "NO"........what about you?

For me, I think it is a valid question.

He hasn't been in the best form, and the amount of goals leaked this season, whether they are his direct fault or not, can't have done his confidence any good.

Yes, its not all his fault, and mistakes were made throughout the team defensively, but no player should be undroppable.

I wouldn't drop him but as Morty says, he isn't untouchable and I think he was culpable for one of the goals. Having said that, we maybe wouldn't have had the two points at WHU and Liverpool if it wasn't for him. And then we would be looking down the barrel.

He has had criticism in the past and didn't react too well, after Reading if I remember correctly, but came back well. So unless there is a major blue in the next game then he is still my number one choice in goal.

At the moment, I don't think he should be the main one to be receiving criticism. The skipper has the most to answer for at the moment.

And the manager isn't fireproof either and has to answer his critics.

I suppose it comes down to whether the player you bring in is any better than an off form first team regular. I rate Dec but he is not as good as Ruddy in my opinion. So no I wouldn't drop him just yet. Certainly he wasn't wholly to blame for yesterday's blip. I do though agree that Ruddy has not looked his best for ages.

I wonder how much is down to coaching. His best spell I think, and I may be wrong, was when we had the England goalie coach Dave Watson? Since then we've had a succession of specialist staff sometimes parachuted in to lend the club a hand. Are they any good? How much difference does a top class goalkeeper coach make? I have no idea, but as its such a specialist position I suppose it must have an affect.

Rudd deserve's a chance now imo, Ruddy's become a tad complacent in my view.

Its a complex issue, and lets not "fox" Rudd, by enhancing his reputation despite not playing.

Ruddy is a better keeper than Rudd. But performance isn't all about ability, its about attitude, state of mind, confidence and desire.

So the decision is there for the manager, but it isn't one to be taken lightly.

I take your point morty but Declan has been deemed 'ready' by AN by selecting him in recent cup games and sitting him on the subs bench Saturday.

Ruddy needs to feel his place is threatened imo.

I dont think he is undroppable but nor do I think he needs to be dropped.    There are far more significant problems with outfield players in front of him that need solving first,  and the number of errors have been much lower than his colleagues.

Add in very good performances at Liverpool and against Leicester his form is good (even his west ham error was more than outweighed by the sheer number of saves to keep his defensive colleagues errors out of the headlines...)

Imo he may do a little better - but in no way bad enough to need dropping (yet)

Ruddy has been good this season. Not a great game yesterday but then again nobody did.

Norwich fans have short memory spans.

I still take issue with using 'fox' here. :)

They always say competition for places is good but we don't appear to have much competition for the 'keeper or the defenders.

Some people know they will be in the team whatever happens. If that can't change now when will it?

Goalkeeper is the one area where it is hard for any manager, apart from Bryan Gunn with Theodolite or whatever his name was, to assess whether the reserve keeper will make a difference.

Surely AN and his staff would suspect if there was any lack of confidence with Ruddy. And how much confidence would Declan have if he gets put behind that defence against ManC in two weeks time?

He will no doubt get a chance against Everton.

The spotlight always tends to fall on the keeper ,and although I don't feel Ruddy has been performing at the same level he was a couple of seasons ago !and I felt could have done better with a couple of goals conceded recently (W.Ham,and Toon) I still feel that we have no real challenger on the bench .Rudd is a capable young keeper but I am not sure he has the same presence as Ruddy and I think the blame lies further up the field for yesterday's debacle . I heard a rumour that the club were thinking of reimbursing Norwich spectators who travelled to the game yesterday ,but realised that it would mean paying about 8 of the team ......?

Rudd is also a great prospect and I think potentially a better keeper.

Would have no problems at all if Alex Neil decided to give Rudd a chance to win the #1 jersey, but not as a rash response to a drubbing, only after a sustained run of poor performances by Ruddy and that hasn't happened yet this season.

Also dropping a keeper doesn't always have to be a negative thing for the keeper himself, Joe Hart was dropped by Man City for a couple of months and came back a much better keeper.

Difficult one. I  think Ruddy has made some great saves this season and looked better on crosses than last year, but there's no getting away from the fact that he's susceptible to low shots/headers, particularly to his left. Rudd is more agile but questionable on crosses and doesn't command his area in the same way. I agree with Morty that he's become better by not playing (The Lafferty Complex ;) ) but he has to be knocking on the door. However, I agree with Zipper that there are bigger problems to deal with.

John is out of form and hasn't been the same for a while. I don't think at home to West Brom is the time to make such a knee Jerk response though. I would be moving Martin to right back and getting Bennett or Wisdom in against Rondon and Berahino though.

If Ruddy doesnt get his form back, i would have no hesitations getting Rudd in the side. He has always played well when called upon
