The Belief That Josh Murphy Is Better Than Nathan Redmond

Is there actually any justification for this other than the fact that one of them came through our academy and therefore benefits from NCFC fans willingly sticking the blinkers on? I've seen fans talk about Josh's 'vision' being better. What evidence have you seen of this exactly? I've been told he's more 'composed'....again....nope, not in my view. The most ridiculous thing is that when Redmond blazed an effort over the bar v Bournemouth, he was booed, Murphy did the same when he came on and was cheered. Utter stupidity. I'm sure someone will argue that 'Redmond always blazes it over the bar'...yes, often he does clear the bar with his efforts, but I thought in playing a far simpler game v Bournemouth (slow the play down, then use a change of pace to get away and cross it in) Nathan was far more effective. It's great to see a homegrown lad doing well in Josh, but Nathan is a phenomenal young talent also, and I think he's at least a fair bit better than Josh is right now. I like them both, but I see zero justification for the argument 'Josh is better than Nathan'- particularly as the former has barely played for us and the latter had a difficult first season in a rigid system on the wrong wing against class defenders.

Yeah, pretty much agree with all of that. Especially the point about blazing the ball over the bar on Saturday.

The system whereby Murphy comes on for Redmond for the final quarter seems fine to me, a good compromise and beneficial to both at this stage in their respective careers.

The fact that a section of the crowd actually booed NR annoys me a lot.

Do people believe he is better or do they just believe Redmond is not irreplaceable and certainly shouldn't be undroppable?

I personally think Redmond is the better player at the minute, but he should be, he has miles more experience than Josh both at this level and higher.

But I wouldn't have been hugely upset to have seen Redmond leave for an extortionate fee and sell on clause.

Not because I think Murphy's better, but because norwich fans seem to be on Redmonds back now and also because at some point you either have to give Murphy a chance in the starting line up, loan him out or dare I say sell him?

I'm happy Redmond is still here though, he is a good player, has the potential to be a great player and really does trouble defences at this level, even if not scoring. It also shows great ambition from the board to resist selling.

Murphy is more of an unknown I guess and has the advantage of being home grown. I hope Redmond gets encouraged by the crowd as I don't think he is far off it all clicking and we will have an international class player on our hands when it does.

the season will show the results

but i do feel josh has far more in his locker than nathan,

nathan has had a couple of seasons here now to show us what he can deliver and i have seen little improvement over this time,

josh has had the benefit of neils coaching for far longer than this and ive seen him improve and learn over the same period, couple this of course with

the instinctive relationship with his brother then there lies the future, very exciting.

I think Josh thinks about the end product more than Redmond. Having played with Jacob all those years and knowing to look up and find his brother with a killer pass gives him an edge over Redmond IMO

I don't think it's easy to say who's "better" but from what I've seen, Murphy looks to be more effective at creating opportunities (and taking them), which has to be a key part of any attacking player's game.  Redmond is so frustrating and doesn't appear to have improved his decision making since joining the club which is a concern.

I'd love to try (just for one game, maybe the shrews game) Redmond and both the Murphys either side of him. Maybe Jerome up top that day and Tettey and Johnno sitting.

In a nutshell....

Josh Murphy reminds me of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain;

Nathan Redmond reminds me of Tony Daley.

Completely agree with everything written in the OP. Redmond is the better player, and it actually annoys me a little the way he's been scrutinised just because he's had a below average start to the season. Don't get me wrong, I can understand all the excitement around Josh Murphy, and even why a fair few fans would like to see him starting ahead of Redmond. But the way Redmond has been treated by some of our fans (booing him for example after he has a shot on goal) is disgusting. Especially as it's well-known that there has been a lot of Premier League interest in him, and yet he has chosen to stay. People seem to forget he's still very young, and has a lot of time to develop.

For most of last season he was pretty much the only bright spark in a poor team. Suddenly we start playing well and fans are getting on his back just because he's had a slow start. Come the end of the season I think he will make a lot of people eat their words.

Jacob Murphy was able to hit a 40 yard crossfield pass to his brother a) because they've done it before, but B) because they were up against a poor Crawley side pushing high to try and get a goal. Why exactly is Josh Murphy more effective at creating opportunities? What opportunities has he created? How many games has he had to do this in and how consistently has he done this compared to Redmond's output over a similar period. This is why I get irate with Norwich fans online, people just say things with no evidence or logical reasoning to their arguments.

I don't see it as a choice. I thinkRedmond and both the Murphys are very talented players as it stands and developing nicely, which is what you expect from such young players. I agree with COTW: Fans that are slagging off Redmond are a bit dim. He's not the finished product yet. Very few players are the finished product at 19 years old. The usual peak is about 27 years old.

Thank the good lord that someone said this, this is a view point that has annoyed me for some time.

Redmond for some reason gets a lot of stick, I really don't understand it and have made my feelings clear on it a lot on here. Redmond causes more problems for defences, love Murphy and think he can be a fine player but I just don't see how anyone can say he is better.

I'm delighted that the boo birds haven't forced him out, as I think they would be feeling pretty stupid if it was their attitude and vocal disappointment that forced him to force through a move.

How anyone justifies booing any player is beyond me, but each to their own.

Props to the original poster for this article though.

Redmond to start for me aswell, i don't know why as it's somewhat different but the views of those calling for murphy to start, just brings back memories of when fans were crying out for andy marshall to replace gunny and we know how that one ended ;)

For me, there is no doubt that they are both talented players and I'm delighted we have both. I trust Neil to pick the best one for each match as they come around, as they are different propositions. Redmond's experience gives him the edge for me, but Josh's lack of fear could be invaluable late in tight games this year.

What a lovely problem for Neil to have to deal with.

in a league game we have yet to see murphy score or assist.   His passing remains inconsistent and crossing no better than redmonds - I am yet to see this end product that is famed.   Experienced defenders currently keep him quiet.   however he clearly has plenty of talent and will improve considerably with more pitch time.   A loan last season would probably have been hugely beneficial.

Redmonds match play is currently vastly superior.    Even in his frustrating last season his assists were only bettered by elmander and crossing accuracy was better by no one,  combined with a high tackle win rate per game and solid passing rate I think fans frustrations are around expectation levels due to his fee and ignorant of his age which means inconsistency and poor choices will continue to feature.

Redmond seems to be this seasons ricky.    Get past that;  he is helping make this system work;  and he is currently better than the alternatives and performing well;  he is not undroppable and we have good alternatives for when his form dips.    Currently he remains first choice starter for me

We all saw what Redmond can do on Saturday when he got to the byline and plonked the ball on Grabban's head, that's why we need him on the right wing rather than the left.

But with Pilkington, Snodgrass and Surman having left it looks likely that we'll see him on the left much more than we see him on the right. Unless Adams intends to keep playing Lafferty on the left.

OR.... Olsson?

I think the infatuation with Josh is the preference for the unknown and unproven. It is often seen in the way that players become so much better in many supporters minds when they have been out of the team for a while.

It seems highly likely that Josh will develop into a very good player but equally likely is that Redmond will become that too and, at the moment, Redmond is far closer to reaching that goal.  Over a long season there is a very good chance that we will see quite a bit of Josh but I suspect that hanging on to Redmond will prove to have been a very astute move. I trust NA to handle both players' development with appropriate care and attention.

Regarding the reaction of the crowd to Redmond's and Murphy's off-target efforts on Saturday it simply demonstrated the fickleness and ignorance of many people.  I hope that the crowd will really get behind Nathan now that we know he is staying and appreciate him as integral to our team's excellent chances of winning promotion this season.

Josh is clearly developing though. There's very little evidence that Redmond has developed at all since we aquired him. If anything when he first came in he was exciting and looked very dangerous. Every time he got the ball you felt he was going to do something and it was hard not to be impressed by him. But for a very long time now its been very hard to see what Redmond brings to the team for a large number of games. Granted Iv not seen many games this season, but I cant remember the last time I was impressed by anything Redmond did. He either isnt involved enough, makes the wrong choices or executes them poorly. I hope he plays more on the right wing this season as he is ineffective at his current level in other postiions. By contrast we have seen Josh come on and score goals and manke assists. Two important things though - Adams knows Josh better than anyone else and consistently picks Redmond ahead of him. Also Josh's impact games have been against weaker opposition.

I personally wouldnt compare them as they are quite different players IMO
