4th time to the SoL for me - a lacklustre 3-0 defeat under Lambert (who knew?) then successive draws under Hughton (his preferred outcome from an away game perhaps?).
It was an attacking lineup with both Redders and Hoolahan (full lineup at the bottom). We were fast out of the blocks and dominated possession from the start.
Sunderland were relying on balls that broke kindly for the small amount of attaxking possession they had. The question was whether we could make the possession count.
at last after 25 or so minutes we made a short corner count ( having tried several times ) and Brady put a powerful shot in which the goalie could only parry it and it went in off Russesll Martin.
City continued to control and a neat 1/2 between Whitts and Wes setup Whitts to bury the shot. We saw out the half with the only threat from Subderland being one header wide of the far post.
there was no resurgence after the break as City continued in control and looked more likely to score, eventually it came from another neat move on the edge of the box setting up Redders, and he placed the ball carefully to the keepers left -2 from 2, not bad.
as the half wore on it started to get embarrassing as City were stroking the ball around. We had several chances to get another and continued to create chances even after AN took off Redders Jerome and Wes - I thought Grabban took a bit f time to settle but became increasingly effective. I'm thinking back to away games towards the end of last season like Leeds, Bolton, Blackburn... None were close to as comfortable a win as this one.
towards the end Sunderland won a free kick and the cross fell to their substitute who buried it - I think AN will be pretty annoyed to concede that sort of goal tbh!
verdict on the players - Redders Jerone and Wes were the standout performers for me, but plenty of good performances all round the team. I think Jerone is key for our setup - he is so powerful and quick, he closes down defenders and forces mistakes and helps to make our pressing game work. Someone as a backup (or to challenge him for a starting position ideally) is my main wish for the. Transfer window plus a quality CB.
