Well it's that time of year plus a dire result and a poor performance, so what do we expect from the January window?
Now I am going to stick my neck out here and say that I do not expect much to happen. There are a number of reasons for this.
First our favourable run of fixtures was at the start of the season, so the time to invest was then. OK we may have tried, tried hard and were ultimately rebuffed but then was the time to invest in the squad.
Second it is hard to see that we can afford a player or players that will make a decisive impact. There is no panacea of players in that will guarantee survival - well not on our budget anyway.
Third our activity in the Summer is not looking that great. I would have thought that by and large we would have been looking to improve on what we had, bringing in players that would be the first to go on the team sheet. Players brought in to assist the tactics we want to play. Only Brady really fits here. I would have expected Mulumbu and M'Bokani to be regular starters but are not. Why? They have looked OK when they have been given a chance. We can not know what goes on behind the scenes but has our scouting system come up with targets who are not up for the fight.
But my main reason is that actually we have a large squad of players. We have a number of senior players out on loan Hooper, Turner, Andreu, Elliot Bennett and of course RvW, Plus at least 4 youngsters gaining experience. To me we have a squad of decent players but with a number falling just short of what you need for the premiership. Players that are unlikely to attract premiership suitors but will be on wages that Championship clubs will not match. If there is to be some renovation of the squad then there will need to be some outs to accommodate the ins. This I think will be hard to achieve, certainly from the fringe players.
So my prediction is that we will largely be going with what we have got and pinning our hopes on our manager, who I still totally back, getting us going again. He looks to be over thinking it at the moment and we need to get back to playing to our strengths rather than prioritising nullifying the opposition.
