Ukraine has largely unexplored rare earth metals, that I’m quite certain President Musk wants access to given his technology portfolio.

That’s why I’m hopeful we’re seeing a lot of smoke blown up Putin’s backside for him to claim a win in Russia, he may be allowed some token territory gains for that purpose, Ukraine won’t join NATO but may well have a significant military presence from countries like us to guarantee its future security.

If not, Russia is massively weakened now in terms of fighters, resources, and economically. I think Europe could keep Russia occupied enough by Ukraine without the US if Ukraine wants to continue.

Nice to see our Maps are getting a pay rise while everybody else is getting hit with tax rises, albeit indirect ones.
I’ve always thought MPs pay should be linked to either the median wage or GDP per capita. That way if they want a pay rise then they actually have to do their job and improve the living standards of the rest of society to get one
Edit: Just to add, I’ve read that if MPs pay since 2010 had risen in line with the countries economic performance, their current salary would be £82k rather than £93k.

Why? You don’t think our signature guaranteeing respect for Ukraines borders as part of them surrendering the Ukrainian Soviet nuclear arsenal should mean anything? Thought you’d have a bit more of a sense of honour than that.

The purpose is clearly not to fight but to be guarantors to deter Putin from going back on his word in a peace agreement as he has a pathological tendency to do.

No doubt there’ll be French, German, Swedish, Polish troops as well. Basically NATO minus the USA.

Personally I was impressed by Starmer’s speech. He has asserted a notion of Europe taking on a peacekeeping role guaranteeing Ukraines borders with the US underwriting it as a backstop.

Interested to see the US reaction.

If you are not at the table it usually signals that you are on the menu.
I don’t know about that. Europe has spent more on Ukrainian défense than the US has. It’s possible that the US has actually tried to position itself as Russia’s’ agent’, with Europe taking up that role on behalf of Ukraine.

Clutching at straws a bit with that theory, but I’m clinging to the notion that we’re not now in a world where the US and China are just going to carve up the world between them.

Nope, still not interested in losing one British life for this bullshit. It is just another chapter in a series of east versus west proxy wars. Jaw jaw always preferable to war war.

A European army is a joke. The only country with any fighting experience is the UK and our forces are so depleted in men and materials we can't even stop men in rubber dinghies arriving on our shores. Ukraine vs russia is not our fight and we should have nothing to do with it unless you are happy to be engaged in a long, drawn out war of attrition. As far as Starmer is concerned, the people he will send to Ukraine, he has labelled as far-right thugs. No working class person should die for Starmer's virtue signalling.

It's not actually a forces problem stopping the boats. It's an international law problem, which is actually very easily fixed by simply withdrawing from a number of human rights treaties, which frankly, I don't think are going to matter much longer anyway; China and Russia have never bothered with it and now the US won't either.

People shouldn't be under any illusion that the UK wouldn't be in a disastrous position if international law falls apart entirely as a country dependent on international trade to survive. As a country that can only produce enough food to meet 50% of its domestic demand, that will end badly.

I think there needs to be a lot of dialogue in the G7 minus America and China to work out a strategy of middle powers keeping the globalist show on the road if we're to avoid being prey of Russia and China carving us all up.

Every major European army is in NATO anyway, which means they're plenty experienced with working with each other cooperatively, Britain, France, and Italy are all still in the top 10 world militaries, with vastly superior technology to Russia. Definitely enough to be a credible deterrent in a peace agreement.

Digressing slightly, but did anyone see the news about the two Aussie Muslim nurses caught promising to kills Jewish and Israeli patients in their Australian hospital and claiming they'd killed some already?

In a twisted sort of way, the solidarity there with the people of Gaza from people who've never been near Gaza and purely on the basis of common religious identity is pretty impressive, albeit distasteful and espeically appalling from medical professionals.

A far cry from Brits who can't stand the thought of British soldiers protecting an allied nation from invasion.
