I think many people find the 'Deadline Day' hype an annoyance they'd rather have steered clear of. The De Gea farce proves the ridiculousness of a lot of it. Madrid wanted to sign him all last season and the whole of the transfer window. Man Utd (and probably accidentally on purpose) give the green light only hours before the window closes and it fails to happen. Stupid.
Similarly I think many people think its just *bleep*-poor organisation to leave everything until the last day.
Of course we know that the club has been trying to do business all summer and hasnt left it until the last minute, but when you consider how we went about business with Brady and the silly and derisory opening offers for him, there is definitely an argument that had we had more convicition earlier in the window with certain targets, we could have had them in months ago.
We only got Brady because noone else was trying to sign him. Imagine we had a competitor and we bid 2m and, say Leicester, bid 6-7m Hull would have accepted it straight away and we'd have missed out. we only got away with our dawdling because noone else was in for him. Similarly if we really wanted Walters we could have had him in an instant for 3m, instead of quibbling about 500k. Remember we released Miquel with a book value of over 1m and paid whatever compensation was necessary, seemingly for little reason seeing as we have a space now.
Our attempts to sign these players looks amateurish, and throwing in bids left right and centre for any striker going on the last day smacks of desperation. These low bids and failure to stump up the necessary cash just makes it look like we werent that bothered about actually getting these players in and were just chancing it. Nothing wrong with that, seeing if you can pick up a bargain - but fans were expecting new players, not a chancing of the hand. And if we really are sore that we missed out on Gayle and were gazumped for other targets, then frankly I think we have only ourselves to blame.
6 defenders for 4 spots frankly is too thin, when you consider we have 5 strikers for one position, and only one option for the Wes role. There are gaps in the squad, and from the outside it looks like the club have simply pissed about all summer then panicked on the last day. I can understand why so many people are unhappy. We look like we have shown a lack of conviction to get deals over the line, meaning the club dont really think there are any squad gaps, or they do but the strategy has been poor. Either answer can draw criticism.
McNally and Neil could dispell a lot of myths if they had an open discussion with fans or a press conference. With fans in the dark, people will always draw their own conculsions and by staying silent Im not sure they're really doing themselves any favours
