Would you work for another club?

I haven't specifically been employed by another club, but in a previous job they were our primary clients so I guess you could say I have done work and worked for other football clubs.

Man City, Fulham, Leicester, Blackburn, Forest, Stoke, West Ham, Notts County, Crystal Palace, Sunderland, Newcastle, Preston, Accrington, Fleetwood, Macclesfield.

Can't remember them all, there is probably a few others, always a bit sad that we never got Norwich in as a client.

I've done some consulting in the NHL for clubs that weren't "my team" (Detroit Red Wings).  One (Tampa Bay) had the potential to impact on-ice performance and another (Dallas) didn't.  For me the Tampa situation was about working through friends who were on the scouting staff to demonstrate some analytical concepts (the hockey equivalent of baseball's Sabermetrics has been very, very slow to take off) I had developed over the years.  It didn't last long as the ownership situation at the time was a mess and as it went downhill the people I connected to were expunged.  The Dallas one was just putting together some historical material regarding pro hockey in the state of Texas (which goes back to 1941) so that the club could develop some historical displays in their offices and in the arena.

I've also done some part-time (play-by-play) and consulting work for some junior hockey teams/leagues.  When I was broadcasting our crosstown rival hosted the league's tournament and so I shared the booth with their broadcaster (2-3 games a day for four games wears on your voice), but we were on good terms off-ice so even though our two clubs had six weeks earlier had a game with a couple bench-clearing brawls and 300+ PIMS, it wasn't a big deal to call games together.

I'll give a good example of someone who went to work for another club in baseball... Bill James.  The man invented Sabermetrics and grew up a Kansas City (A's, then Royals) fan.  Though he lived in Lawrence (about an hour from the ballpark) the Royals never engaged him through the 80s and 90s as he was developing his advanced methods and cranking out annual books.  To be fair, only a couple of other teams WERE doing this as late as the late 90s.  Finally the Red Sox grabbed him in 2003, and with his help and others, finally got over the Curse of the Bambino.

You gotta grab the opportunities as they present themselves.  If you're lucky you can find your way home, but it doesn't always happen.
