Time to rest Ruddy?

I have a feeling that not being third choice goalkeeper for England at the last World Cup has perhaps dented his ambition. Watching from behind the goal in the Lower Barclay he is not the player he was in previous seasons, does not even attempt to shout at defenders, except when a goal has been conceded, and seems to have lost the ability to dominate his area. Maybe a spell as number two goalkeeper might bring back the appetite and we can see how good, or otherwise, Declan Rudd is.

For me, no.

I suspect Ruddy is as frustrated with the defensive inconsistincies as we all are. He will always be the butt of defensive mistakes, but now is not the time to scapegoat him, when we should be concentrating on building a cohesive defensive unit, that includes Ruddy.

I agree Morty but on the other hand, when anybody else makes a howler, there is a topic about it. I do believe that many feel that Ruddy is fire proof. I'm not sure that any person at the club is and that everyone must take a turn in the stocks if they have had a stinker.

I think that there is something to be said for giving Rudd a few games. For all the reasons given by Personaltrainer, or others, Ruddy does not seem quite the keeper he was. We said that last season as well.

Goalkeepers mature slowly, and reach their peak much later than outfield players, but it is difficult to see any great improvement in John Ruddy's play. Rather, he seems to have gone a little backwards. The decline/stagnation seemed to date from the terrible injury he had a season or two ago. He clearly had to feel his way back.

It is difficult to pinpoint specific failings, but there are some goals scored against or minor errors, and I am left wondering, "Would the Ruddy of old have done better there?" Sometimes, perhaps occasionally, the answer is that old Ruddy would have done better.

I think that Rudd is a better all round keeper than Bunn, despite the latter's shot-stopping ability. If Rudd is to develop further, however, he needs a few games. Now could be the time, when the defence is wobbling regularly, to give Rudd a few games.

Oh, I don't disagree. But dropping a keeper is a very different prospect to dropping a player in any other position. And my opinion is that whilst he isn't on top form, other peoples defensive errors are only serving to make him look worse.

I don't feel he has been as 'bad' as others suggest - As Morty said, as goalkeeper he will always be the butt of any defensive mistake.  Having said that he certainly hasn't been at his best this season, IMO.

Could this have something to do with Dave Watson's move to Southampton?  Ruddy will have benefited from having a top-notch goalkeeping coach - even just to work on little things that may have been picked up on in the previous match, as opposed to the basics like "this is how you catch a ball".

As for resting him - no, I don't think so.  It can work I guess, see Man City and Hart/Pantilimon last season, but I think there are bigger issues at the minute and bringing in Rudd probably wouldn't help.  Personally, I would like to see a back four picked and then left alone barring injury.

When we first acquired Ruddy, he suffered for not being Fraser Forster (wrt his England credentials you could say the same is still true). He looked short on confidence, and when he made a mistake this only seemed to worsen the 'He's not Fraser' feeling. Think this put him under more pressure and his performances worsened.

I think to not show faith in Ruddy would be counter-productive. I don think he's at his best this season, but I dont think we'd tease his best out of him by dropping him. Think Ruddy needs to know he is the main man and believed in. So I say back him

I personally wouldn't drop him yet. But it is true that he does not look the same player he has been in previous seasons. With the exception of the Brentford game where he made a few good saves in the first half which effectively kept us in the game, I can't remember him having what you can describe as a brilliant performance. I also can't remember a genuine "What a save!" moment from him this campaign, whereas in previous seasons there have been plenty. The main one that sticks out in my mind is the save in the 93rd minute against Manchester United, when Van Persie delivered in the free-kick, and it glanced of Bassong's head and nearly into the top corner, and Ruddy dived to his right and got a hand there. If something similar happened now, I wouldn't be particularly confident that he could save it.

As I said, I wouldn't drop him now, but if he continues to under-perform then I would have no problem of giving Rudd a chance.

Well given as has been stated he is not dominating the area, and that we have been undone too often by the one shot on target the opposition have had, then playing a good shot stopper in goal has lots of merits. Bunn is not fit at the moment, so Rudd.

However my instincts are also not to drop him. We need to get to something like a settled team to allow confidence to grow. NA has been continually tinkering trying to find the winning formula. JR is likely to remain our number one choice, so we need to play him as part of a likely best starting 11.

Perhaps we need to see a compilation video of Ruddy's best moments to remind ourselves of how good he is. Main Ruddy save I remember is his save from Suarez (arguably this in itself is a collector's item) at Anfield when we drew 1-1 in our first Prem season with Lambert. Perhaps Im biased on this one though as I was behind him when he made it

I see nothing wrong with giving Rudd a game or two.   For one thing Rudd deserves a chance now and then apart from the odd cup game.   Its a squad game as we are always being told and if Rudd is to be considered a main player in that squad and not just a stand in, then why not give him a game.  Competition never did any one any harm - Ruddy might even appreciate it.........and Rudd is quite capable of doing a good reliable job.

We have no other choice. Rudd is not up to it. We have let better keepers go.

I personally would be very confident with Rudd in goal. Made more appearances than anybody else for Preston last season (54), and I think was either 2nd or 3rd in the POTS vote. And even if you bypass Rudd, when John Ruddy was injured a couple of seasons ago, Mark Bunn was superb between the sticks. Whilst I am willing to stick with Ruddy for now, any more mistakes then I would not be any less confident with either Rudd or Bunn in goal.

Isn't Bunn injured just now? Wasn't he about to leave then picked up a bad injury?

I think he's just recovered from the injury. Read an article a couple of weeks ago that he was back in training, so I assume he's relatively close to being fully fit, if he's not already.

Bunn, would be fine at this level as I am sure Rudd would be too......BUT...Ruddy is a class act, and for me is key to our team right now during a tough time.

Changing players doesn't necessarily change results. To improve defensively we need to tighten up the links between keeper and defence rather than change the keeper and start all over again. Bunn and Rudd will get their chances, but not yet IMO.

Rudd is 23, same age as Ruddy was when we signed him, and he's not going to get any better sitting on the bench. One way or another he needs to be playing first team football soonish and I'm not convinced it will be with us.

Not neccessarily sure we should be dropping Ruddy but he was poor again today and has been pretty effing bad by his standards all season.
