I was thinking the same about Frankie Boyle, although I suspect even he would think it was a bit too soon for that joke?As much as I love John Ruddy, the old 'I was hacked' excuse is a bit soft. There would've been a lot less hate had he just stuck by it.
It's making something out of nothing really. It's simply because it's a footballer who's tweeted it that people have gone out of their way to try and find it offensive. If it was a comedian like Frankie Boyle then no-one would bat an eyelid, and most people would find it hilarious.
It will blow over within a couple of weeks I reckon, people will soon find something else to be outraged by, probably another Katie Hopkins tweet.' to hit you over the head with for the rest of your life.

I think this one will be fine, that joke really wasn't THAT offensive.I dunno. Anyone with an agenda. There are things from years back still doing the rounds on Twitter because it serves someones agenda. Once its screen-shot its unretractable. Bit like Michelle Keegans boobs on instagram!
