Hi,

I am currently studying at Staffordshire University and I am currently creating a project on 'Football fans perceptions on racism'. I want to create a discussion with you guys about your view/stance on the issue, any experiences of racism and the role of social media on racism. This is not spam, this is me asking for help to create a reliable project.

So please help me create a good reliable discussion on racism in football.

It doesn't matter to me what color you are.

It matters to me where you come from because different cultures around the world obviously have different views on many things and sense of humor can vary enormously. 

So I have good banter with my friends from all over the place.

I don't really know what discussion there is to have to be honest. Abusing people because of their colour/nationality is wrong in football and in all walks of life.

I'm not sure that racism among football fans in this country exists to any greater degree than it does in wider society in general. 

I've witnessed racism once or twice at Carrow Road, sat in front of a couple of idiots monkey chanting once. I would have confronted them but they looked mental and possibly wired on class A's of some description so I opted not to. Long time ago now and for all I know it could have been the first game they'd ever been to. 

That's about as far as my experience with racism at football goes.

That said, I do wonder why teams like Bradford and Leicester who have huge Asian populations in their cities don't get many Asian faces in the crowd, so perhaps the people that would tell you that racism is rampant in the sport are those who are too scared to go to a game.

A lot of people get into football through family members. If your family like cricket you're probably going to end up a cricket fan.

One of the great things about football as a sport is that it is a true meritocracy. You don't get a job because if who your father is, where you went to school or who you know. It is one of the few places where a kid from a village in the wildness of Rwanda or the mean streets of Ascension can get employment over a billionaire's son from Eton.  It's about how good you are. 

I don't think that that is true of fans who reflect society after all. The success of black players has greatly helped combat racism. I remember monkey noises being made at Justin Fashanu despite the fact that the opposition had black players too. The general lesson that our own heroes are black has made a difference over the years.

The real issue in football is management and coaching which is less of meritocracy for many reasons including white conservative owners, older managers appointing people like themselves and the fact that success is harder to define so the criteria are more blurred.  I've not come across player racism but there was some subtle and ugly racist undertones to some message boards when Chris Hughton was manager here.

I believe racism, and homophobia btw, still festers in football and not just in England.

Stopping it is another matter though, so much ignorance still exist in the world I'm afraid.

Wiz, I go one step further and say that racism and homophobia still festers in the UK, more than many believe,  that's what it feels like when I have been away and return each time. No idea why, but the over the top political correctness could have something to do with it.

I totally agree Mark, many who were calling for Hughton's head (I include myself in this) were accused of racism on that other site, when the truth of it was we thought he was just an awful manager for us.

All good points made. Racism will always be involved within football, it always has and always will. Personally I have not witnessed any racism in a football stadium however your point on social media is a good one. Racism went under the radar for a few years but since the influx of social media, such as twitter / message boards etc., racism has hit an all time low again. I have seen subtle forms of racism on other message boards aimed at managers, players and other online users.

My other point on racism is the top of the hierarchy of football. Most of them are still living in the 80's and 70's and think racism will just blow over, look at Sepp Blatter where he said they should just 'shake hands' and Wigans chairman said something also. This is one main issue where racism stems from and why football struggles to move on compared to other sports.

Those two elderly gentlemen hardly represent 'most of them'. The current chairman of the FA is Greg Dyke, who hates all things 'hideously white'.

But there was clear undertones if racism with CH wiz unfortunately.  Canaryboy, agree it is a global problem and will never go away, but some countries outside if the UK are certainly less racist from my experience.

I can actually think of a lot of developed countries which are far more racist. Italy is a tough place to live if you are a black man. You're fine as a white man in Japan, but you won't get along very well if you are Chinese, and look at the way Aborigines are treated in Australia. 

As an aside, I watched an old episode of Only Fools the other day and almost choked on my coffee when Del Boy said he was going to the "Paki shop", its just what they used to say back then, won't see that episode getting a re-run on Gold.

Look Morty lade, I'm just an old fart who'll never change and I'm immune to the old death quota, sob story lark too, I don't like them, I trust them even less, they eat raw fish, kill tigers, whales and dolphins and polute the planet...............so give em' hell is ok with me.

But don't worry, people with my views are fast dying out, and once we're dead and gone, the world will be just one big melting pot of slitty eyed, rainbow coloured  f*ckwits!

Not sure why you think I'd ban somebody for quoting a public post from another website, contrary perhaps to popular belief the number of people who currently have a ban of any duration whatsoever on this site stands at zero. Even the one lifetime ban handed out in this sites 19 months of existence was rescinded. 

The total number of bans of any duration handed out by this site is three. There are at least three members here who have had lifetime bans from the Pink'un, just for the record.

I came to football comparatively late, in relation to my age, and only started watching in the early 90's when openly racist behaviour was on the wane. I think that football, in general has gone to great lengths to stamp out racist behaviour, but at the end of the day football fans are a cross section of society, a society that still has racist people in it. The only real difference is that has no longer become acceptable to express your views publically, but I have absolutely no doubt that people feel the same as they always did.

Racism has been intermingled with xenephobia now in light of open European borders and migrant refugees, stirred up by paranoia fuelled by terrorism.

I don't believe football is any more or less racist than society as a whole, what bothers me more is enforced diversity when it is touted that we must have more black managers. Why should we? If they are good enough then it doesn't matter what colour they are, and the premise they should be given a chance just because of their colour is a bit odd, in my opinion.
