As for Howson, I know he's 29 and on good money and stuff and we have to be sensible etc.
But I also think we should beg him to stay.

At the detriment of rebuilding the defence though? I wonder just how much money and length of contract we'd have to offer him?
What if Vrancic turns out to be better, at a fraction of the price? I read a brief report of last night that had him as man of the match.

Thing is and of course, I could be wrong but i'd like to think we have some freedom to buy some defensive players without having to sell Howson. Of course I said that to begin with and Webber seems to disagree, but I'm not sure, even with a few valueless signings, how we've managed to p*ss away all that moneys!

You can look at this a few ways.
I refuse to believe that we're completely broke. But everyone has a price, I think Webber, quite cleverly, made statements some time ago inviting offers for pretty much everyone. If Middlesboro don't come up with the price we want then we'll keep him I guess. But I think we have a ready made replacement in Vrancic, in an already fairly well stocked midfield, so I think we are just waiting on the right price for Jonny, and he'll be gone.
My opinion is torn on this, we looked a far poorer side last season when Jonny was out, but then we looked poor for a lot of reasons other than him. He is probably one of my favourite players in recent times, but I can see the logic of what we're doing here. To tempt him to stay we'd have to better his current deal, which I assume is already pretty good. Or we roll the dice, let him see out his final year, and he walks away for nothing next season.
Glad I'm not making these decisions!

Same logic applies to.... Jerome or Oliveira, Naismith or Pritchard, etc.
The players that can still feasibly be key members of our team in 5 years time have to be considered more important. That's why we are entertaining offers for Dorrans, Jerome, and even Howson.
Probably wouldn't rule out Howson playing at a high level until he's 35 or 36 like Scott Parker, but with Dorrans he's probably entered that stage now where he'll get niggling injuries every season and we've seen how quickly a striker can decline with Holt, Jerome doesn't have much to offer us once he has lost his pace which is bound to happen in a couple of years.
If we are listening to offers for Jerome then one would assume we've got our eye on a younger striker, not often a cheap position to buy for and that may be why we really need to sell Howson.
Still a bit depressing to think that if we could shift Naismith we'd probably be able to keep Howson though?

And to be fair we shouldn't be in a situation where we HAVE to sell one or the other so I reserve my right to go with neither.
But if you pushed me, i'd sell Howson. Jacob's value is likely to increase whereas Howsons will only decrease. Also, one of our own yada yada yada.

few rumours about that we are after Daryl Murphy, not sure how I feel about this even forgetting the Ipswich connection, he is a proven goalscorer at this level, but does he offer anymore than Jerome and Oliviera who are both younger, he's probably better in the air than both, but if we're going to keep playing one up front I feel that Jerome and Oliviera are better options

cant see any truth in the daryl rumours - completely wrong profile.
As far as Jacob or Jonny, it would have to be howson, the murphys offer that unexpected that is harder, more unique and expensive to find.
As refined a footballer as howson is there are now options already at the club to cover his loss, who will do a decent job overall if not quite to the same level when howson is at his best
As hoggie points out he is at the stage where his performances and value will deteriorate so cashing in now and using what limited cash it frees up to strengthen CB & LB will leave us with a slightly lower quality but far better balanced squad, having hopefully retained most of the attacking threat while significantly improving the defensive structure.

Pretty much, he's a Lambert type player.
Not what I envisage for our revolution, would be a bit of a letdown if we start hoofing it to a battering ram for the last 20 minutes every other week, but we did it with Wilbraham and Murphy will do a good job for somebody.
Would have been funny if they had signed Lafferty and got all excited though, and we turned around and signed Murphy :lol:
