I wouldn't say I feel sorry for him but I can see why he's f*cked off. He wanted to go and the club turned down good money for him. Yet they've sold other people. So he obviously feels hard done by.

I mean clearly there are worse problems in life but it's also what man management is all about. Oliveira is clearly a talented player and he has shown it for us but we now find ourselves in a position where we can't get the best out of him.

If he wanted to go, believe me, he would have gone.

You can be pretty sure the club told him "Don't worry, we are going to have a go at promotion this year" and he has pretty quickly sussed we are not really doing that. I think you can tell from Pritchard's departure too that he does not see this club as going the right way.

Not sure about that to be honest. We turned offers down for him in the summer yes but I remember at the time when Wolves were linked he issued a statement or something saying that he was happy here. It's since then that he's started to perform poorly.

All his career he's never been settled and has had loan spells in Portugal, Spain, France and two in England. We signed him on a perminant deal giving him some stability for the first time in his career, and yet 18 months later he wants to move on again. Don't get me wrong at times last year and at the start of this season he's proved he's one of the best strikers in the league, but he seems to think that because of that he has the right to not put in the amount of effort he should be, seemingly not giving any thought to the fact that part of the reason he was so sought-after in the summer was because we took a chance and signed him permanently.

One thing's for sure is that he'll be much more likely to get the move he wants if he just gets his head down and starts producing again.

Very much doubt any of that.

Pritchard wanted out - he went.
Russ Martin wanted out - he went
Naismith, Cam Jam etc wanted out - they went

Why do you think the club have tried to keep Nelson against his wishes? All of the evidence suggests otherwise.

You don't think maybe he'd liked to have linked up with the fellow Portuguese at Wolves, plus all the money and strong chance of promotion?

Because in the summer we didn't have a good striker to come in to replace. And at this point it appears we still haven't got one. Not a difficult one to work out.

How many loans did Harry Kane have? ;-)

I know this is tongue in cheek from you but he had less loans at a younger age.

Olivieras goal scoring record is average at best at other clubs too. Total of about 140 apps and 26 goals. About 1 in 5. So whilst he has some ability the evidence suggests last season was very much the exception rather than the norm

Maybe we found a way to play last season that got the best out of him. But, as we all know, the system we play now doesn't get the best out of him. Or maybe he doesn't get the best out of the system.

Either way it doesn't work.

But overall my feeling is that the way we play is going to be a tough ask for most strikers. I'm not convinced we'll see a prolific striker under Farke.

Oh I'm sure he does, but my point was that he clearly didn't in the summer because as I said he put out a message saying that he was happy here, plus he was scoring goals for us. So it's not like in the summer he was sitting there watching some big players leave and thinking he wants in on the action, it's only seems to be since our great run ended (after the Arsenal game) that he's felt like this.

As I said as well, we were the first club in his career to actually put some faith in him and give him some stability, but 18 months later, when realistically he hasn't actually yet proven himself as a top Championship striker, he wants to move on again and because he does he's not putting in the effort he should. He's not Alexis Sanchez so I don't know why he thinks he has the right to do that, whether he wants to leave or not.

It isn't all his fault definitely. He clearly doesn't fit in with what Farke is trying to do. Regardless though 2 goals in the last 13 games, one of which was a penalty, isn't good enough.

You assume that he has the hump because the club refused to sell him on during the summer. As far as I am aware the opposite was the case but I guess both of us may be wide of the mark.

Webber said that any player that wanted to leave could go & it seems that he was true to his word. From what I have seen, Oliveira is a fairly average Champs striker who is currently struggling with form. He has had plenty of chances in Farke’s set-up but has squandered most of them and probably deserves to be dropped. Hopefully a new striker will be brought in, probs from German lower leagues, before the window closes.

The thing I don't get about Nelson is that when he hit that great scoring streak he was scoring goals from all over the place, beating men and banging out in from 25 yards etc, creating his own chances out of nothing.

Now people are saying that we aren't creating chances for him, and some truth perhaps, but the thing that made him good was his ability to fashion a goal out of nowhere in a moment of magic... so I'd lean towards it being a confidence thing to some degree.

Does seem to be more disciplined with his decision making now, e.g. looking for a team mate instead of taking a pot shot. But if he went and scored a brace against Brentford you'd probably tip him to go on a great run of form again. Confidence player no doubt..... but the fact that we're 100% reliant on a confidence player right now to score our goals is concerning.

Yeah but what he actually means is any player can go - if the terms are right. Which is pretty much the same for any player anywhere.

No I don’t think that’s the case at all. If it were we would still have plenty of unhappy squad players moping around Colney. All of the players who wanted out have been given a way out. Webber has stated his policy publicly & all the evidence points towards him honouring that pledge.

I am more confident than I have ever been that the players we have want to be here.

Webber says whatever he needs to publicly. He's a shrewd operator like that. Which I have no problem with. He has to play his cards close to his chest.

We've done deals where it suits us. Where we can get rid of high earners and have a replacement.

But, as everyone knows, good strikers are the hardest signings to make. Does anything about this season, from that game at Fulham, make people think Oliveira really wants to be here?

I don't think he does, although don't think that's the sole cause of the problem... he thrived on being the man of the moment when he went on that goal scoring run, sure he'd forget about that £10k a week extra he could be getting at Wolves if he was doing well on the pitch. Needs a goal or two.

Bit concerning that we've found ourselves in this situation in a January window though, didn't we learn from Robbie Brady? Get as much of your business done in the summer as possible, the fact that we've left ourselves needing 3 players in January is a bit alarming.

But surely we must have a right back lined up? We've just let Russell Martin leave, and allowed Godrey to stay out on loan, so our cover has gone to Rangers... we'd surely only sanction that move with an incoming player expected?

I said 18 months ago when Rotherham signed Darnell Fisher for a few hundred grand that we should have gone for him instead of extending Whittaker's deal (strong and quick, 21 then, 23 now). Still think he'd be a good signing and one who is young enough for Farke to improve / mould, problem is he's gone to Preston in the interim.

Actually just realised that Alex Neil signed Darnell Fisher for Preston.

Cheers mate, could have signed him for us instead of giving Whittaker another year :rolleyes:

Haven’t posted on here for a while, so hello again all!

Just my thoughts from the game yesterday - I thought we looked very tired, as expected. Sheff Utd clearly did their homework and played better than us - simple as. I loved the passion from the two defenders Pinto and Klose - we need that sort of fire and drive in the team. We desperately desperately need another striker - We simply need a goal scorer, it’s obvious that either Nelson’s confidence is completely gone, or he simply isn’t interested anymore, who knows. However, we now need to look to the next game and hopefully grab some points out of that. I’m actually looking forward to next season, I think it will be an exciting one, much more so than this season.
