Questionable futures

Now we have finally answered the question of where we will be playing next season, there are a number of players with question-marks over their futures.

Whittaker I would hope would stay, but his pace was questioned in the Premier League last season, and a year older that will still remain an issue. Good squad player, but not sure we should think of him as a fixture at right-back.

Bassong - been superb since his return to the fold, and this seems to have happened with little upheaval, so I would imagine he would stay. But it could also be argued that his return was simply rescuing a difficult situation effectively, and that next season it might be better for all concerned if he moved on. Hard to know how completely the rift has been healed.

Garrido. Premier League quality and able back-up to Olsson. Think Olsson will likely to be happy to stay now we've gone back up, and if he does, cant think its in Garrido's best interests to stay after 2 years rotting on the bench.

Turner - think his contract might be up. After a difficult start with the club performed superbly with Bassong and felt he was hard done by a little when farmed out to Fulham. I hope he stays, but can see him moving on.

Miquel - Think the parallels between him and Ayala are there to be drawn. Relatively a fair amount of money paid for someone who had almost no first team impact. Ayala has gone on to do well (perhaps not at Wembley), so probably a season long loan to the championship would be the best way to bring him on.

Toffolo - Had a good season at League One level. Probably needs a loan to a Championship club. Shame for continuities sake that that couldnt have been Swindon.

The Murphy's. Neil I think sees them as less ready for the first team than Adams, though next year might be their season, with Neil reputedly keen to bring on the youth. Think in all likelihood though they will both be loaned out. Jacob possibly sold.

Elliott Bennett. Great guy to have around by all accounts, but through injury and whatnot he has stagnated and seems a bit part player these days. I think he would make a great right-back, but wouldnt surprise me if he moved on.

Gary O'Neil. Good experience to have and not sure theres the need to move him on, but less and less a part of the first team, so wouldnt be surprised if he left.

VOO - We hardly know him. It might be that with a full pre-season he could be an influential player for us, but its hard to see. He might simply fade into obscurity even more than he already has.

Andreu - Doesnt seem ready for the championship, so not sure how he will do with the Prem. However, think Neil said his problem was the physical side, so it may be that like Arshavin at Arsenal (where it was said he might never be able to play Premier League football, then worked hard and became effective) with some good fitness work pre-season he could make a useful contribution. Not sure why Neil bought him if he saw no future role for him.

Hooper - With Neil's system using a lone striker, how Hooper fits in is a difficult question. Looked effective playing behind the lone striker in terms of goals, but this isnt really his position. In all probability his best role for us is going to be off the bench - but doubt he is going to settle for that.

Lafferty - Again where he fits in is difficult to answer. Certainly not a winger. Thought he would play an important role this season as the talisman we never replaced when Holt left, but it proved not to be. Dont think he's the right type of lone striker for us, therefore probably needs to move on.

RvW - He's still our player and apparently St Etienne dont want him (or say they cant afford him). Would like to think that Alex Neil could find that 20 goal a season striker in him that we all thought was there, but I doubt he'll get a second bite of the cherry. Hard to see who would come in for him though other than a Dutch or Portuguese club, where his reputation remains.

French media are reporting RvW to stay at St Etienne, which would be a great weight off our shouders as it's the only issue we still need to bury from our relegation season. They've probably negotiated a lower price.

I did wonder if the gallic shrung and 'sorry, we 'av no money' was simply a way of getting us to lower the cost of their option on him.

Not sure how I feel about that if its worked.

Should also say that I forgot Carlos Cuellar in my list. Forgot he was still at the club in truth. Good back-up player with Premier League experience, probably no need to move him on, though would want to know what his wages were like...

I would think most of those players mentioned will stay. I have no doubts about Whittaker or Bassong. It would surprise me if Hooper left as well, so I think those 3 are pretty certain to stay. I also think that Josh Murphy, Jacob Murphy and Toffolo will all be loaned out again. I wouldn't want to see any of them sold and I don't think they will be. It was only recently that Neil said that Norwich fans will 'see the best of Andreu', so I can't see him going anywhere either, although it wouldn't surprise me as much.

The rest I think is anyone's guess. I would definitely like Elliott Bennett to stay, as if nothing else he is good back-up for Redmond, and is versatile in the sense that he can play right back as well. I think he'll probably stay as well. Same applies to O'Neil. I would also like to see Odjidja-Ofoe stick around, because I think from the glimpses I've seen he is a talented player, but injuries have heavily impacted on his time here so far, and hopefully if he stays free of them next season we'll see what he's all about. Miquel I think we should loan out, as he's clearly not going to play. He's still relatively young but like Odjidja we're yet to see what he can do, so I think a year in the Championship playing regularly is what he needs.

The others I think it depends on what we do in the summer in regards to signing players. I personally don't think Garrido is good enough any more to a Premier League left back, and think we should look for another back-up left back in the summer, as his contract is up now anyway. I'd like us to keep hold of Turner, as he's proven in the Premier League and is good back-up, but I think he will also move on as his contract is also up, and AN seems to have him down as 5th choice. Based on what we've seen of him this season, I don't think Lafferty is Premier League quality. However we haven't seen him in his best position of up front yet, so I wouldn't mind us keeping hold of him and perhaps playing him as a striker in the cup to see how good he really is in that position. And with RvW, although there's a part of me that wants us to keep him, and give him one final opportunity to show us what we paid nearly £9m for, I think the most sensible thing is to move him on, and try and get a few million of the 8 and half we paid back.

Another two of course are Cuellar and Olsson. I'm sure that Olsson will move to West Brom this summer, with Dorrans coming the other way. Whilst I would like us to sign Dorrans perminantly, I would rather it not be in a deal with Olsson, as we saw last season that he is good left-back at this level, and is another player who improved a lot when Alex Neil came in. Think I'm right in saying that Cuellar's contract is up this summer, and considering that he's barely featured since Neil arrived it wouldn't surprise me to see him leave. I would prefer though if Turner left we keep him, and likewise I would prefer that if Cuellar left we keep Turner.

We have 30 players who are 21 years old or over if we count Dorrans and assume that he'll join on a permanent, and can only register a squad of 25 for the Premier League, so it does look likely that we'd want to be losing 9 or 10 of them in order to bring in new players. We don't really have any option other than to swing the axe, rules are rules, why keep players who can't legally play?

Bunn, Garrido and Cuellar are out of contract. We have a one year option on Garrido. Is there any point in keeping Garrido if we have Toffolo at the club, who is only 19 so doesn't take a spot in the 25?

Becchio we should pay off if we can't shift him. One years wages to free up a space.

Van Wolfswinkel will hopefully be moving to St Etienne.

Then there is Lafferty and Odjidja-Ofoe. The latter has actually been fit for quite a while and has made the bench a few times under Alex Neil, if he can have an injury free pre-season then perhaps he'll be a handy squad member for next season. I suspect Lafferty will be on the transfer list, just isn't a Premier League player and Neil didn't fancy him.

I hope that we've learnt something from the Daniel Ayala departure and would consider a season long loan for Ignasi Miquel rather than selling him on the cheap to the Championship so soon, get him out on loan. Loza is also 21 now, get him out on loan for a year too, tell him to go and score a load of goals in League 1 if he wants a future here.

I very much doubt that Turner will be given a chance in the Premier League by Alex Neil, he just didn't fancy him, is clear that centre back is a position that we need to strengthen this summer.

As mentioned above Andreu hasn't featured much and Alex Neil has said that he needs to work on the physical side of his game, so send him out on loan to the Championship to play a season of football, see if comes back having toughened up? Possibly with a recall clause so we can put him in the 25 in January if he impresses.

So my guess would be:

Release: Bunn, Cuellar, Becchio, Garrido

Sell: Van Wolfswinkel, Lafferty, Turner

Long loan: Loza, Miquel, Andreu

That would leave us with a squad of 20, with room for 5 new signings aged 21 or over. Plus Dorrans who I've counted in the 20.

Din do you really think Olsson will leave in the summer? Seemed to burn his bridges with West Brom, and probably just wanted Premier League football, if the issue was money then he's got his pay rise now. All members of the squad who saw wages fall upon relegation will presumably see their wages go back up now?

He's looked a lot more committed and motivated under Alex Neil, I'm fairly sure he'll be sticking around for at least one more season, and West Brom would now be a sideways step? Plus we've got money now so can just pay straight cash for Dorrans.

Reports saying today that a deal for Dorrans is all but done.

Seriously, has Becchio STILL got another year on his contract?

Yep, he got a three and a half year deal. It's a strange one isn't it?

Garrido has also been a bit of an odd one, 6 appearances in two full seasons since joining on a permanent.

On paper they should both be players of sufficient ability to have done a job for us over the past couple of years, Becchio scored 19 goals in half a season for Leeds and was given less football than Steve Morison!

Becchio has ANOTHER YEAR??!!

FML.

I'd be shipping him out to literally ANY club who will take him for free, or loan him out even if we have to pay 50-60% of his wages

Deal apparently agreed at £3million (though this is in the Mirror!!)

Lot of sense in that when considering the 25 squad limit.

I completely forgot about Becchio - easily done

Id be surprised if Olsson left. Clearly wanted to play Premier League football, thats why he left Blackburn, and got frustrated by the team languishing and, after a great season in the Premiership, looking at championship football for an extended period again.

A lot has changed since then, ambitious new manager, back in the Prem. Think top level football was all he wanted. He'll get that again now, so cant see why he'd look to move

Who was the worst signing? Becchio or RvW? Both terrible signings for different reasons

Becchio was worse.

RvW at least gave the impression of wanting to better ourselves. We were all excited by his arrival.

I was never excited by the arrival of Becchio!!

 My guess would be:

Release: Bunn, Cuellar (though not sure), Becchio, Garrido, Turner (as he is out of contract)

Sell: Van Wolfswinkel, Lafferty

Long loan: Loza, Miquel, Jacob Murphy, Toffolo

Four new signings to come in.
