Summer transfer rumours.

I think both the Murphy's are a tad bit over rated to be honest, although I actually think Josh is a bit more well rounded than Jacob Murphy. I can't really see either of them ever making it at Premier League level, destined to just be good Championship players for the next decade.

They both know how to score goals but their all round play is limited, neither can defend or offer anything much at all when we are under the cosh and both seem to go missing fairly frequently. Always thought they lacked a bit of bottle to be honest and if Josh Murphy wants to bale because of criticism which is sometimes justified then that possibly supports that view? Jacob Murphy isn't rated in the slightest by Newcastle fans, who all think he looks like a deer in the headlights.

That said, not massively confident that this regime would replace with a player of equal ability.... can imagine us having Steipermann on the left wing or something.

But I'll say it for the 5th time... Marcus Maddison would be an improvement. But we don't see to be making those sort of signings (best of League One).

So its tough to determine whether £10m would be excellent money for Josh Murphy really, it won't be if it means Wildschut on the left wing next season. It might be if we can go and steal Maddison for £2m from Peterborough or something, he's on the transfer list as he only has 1 year left on his deal.

Maddison is a lot more like Pilkington, being able to show a player inside or out, can play either flank and and will score goals from around the edge of the box.

Its not losing Murphy which worries me, its who this regime would replace him with to be honest.

I agree with you, but if we were to think of Godfrey or Cantwell , who are both highly rated, but not yet ready and have been out on loan a number of times in Godfreys case, then the temptation to leave for regular first team football must be quite tempting. I guess it’s up to the coaching staff etc to convince them that they have a future here.

"Highly rated" is a term that gets thrown around far too much when it comes to young players.

ps. Maybe Farke doesn't want any wingers and we're playing 3-2-3-1-1 now? Wing backs? We've always looked better with three centre backs. No chance of Josh Murphy fitting into that sort of system, he definitely can't play number 10 or at wing back.

How "over rated" do you have to be for Rafa Benitez to pay 12m for you, or Neil Warnock 10m? I would consider both of them fairly shrewd operators. We have done well to have pulled their respective pants down :)

Benetiz was very hit and miss at Liverpool when it came to signings in fairness, and got particularly wasteful towards the end.

Think he paid loads for Aquilani who was a flop, then all sorts of troubles signing decent full backs with Morena, Dossena, etc. But made up for it with a few huge hits, like Alonso for £6m who was pretty much world class.

I just think with the way that we play we might be better off with wide players who are more all round players like Snodgrass who could contribute to all phases of play and could win the ball back and double on opposition wingers etc, and had a mentality where his head never really dropped so he was less likely to drift out of games.

I know its easier said than done than to just say "lets sign the next Robert Snodgrass" because he's basically a top 1% Championship player and earning £70k a week. But the Murphy's seem to go missing when they aren't getting the rub of the green or when their side isn't getting the most possession, they can't contribute much when under the cosh and you're struggling to string 4 passes together, or when you've got 10 men behind the ball.

Decision making and end product leaves a lot to be desired, form very patchy. I mean it is definitely possible that they could improve in all of those respects, but I think they have similar glaring weaknesses as Redmond to be honest, who has just had a very poor season at Southampton and has basically not developed at all since leaving us.

I think Pilkington and Snodgrass have been the two best wingers we've had since Lambert took over a decade ago, and neither was a pace merchant, they were the most 'all round' players. Pilkington had a turn of pace but it was his ability to turn the full back inside or out which made him really dangerous, because he could use both feet.

Or we could just be in more of a mess financially than we believe. There have been rumours haven't there.

None of us know what the project loss is for next season based on current wage bill. Somebody on the Pink'un is claiming that Moxey gave the Murphy's £28k a week.

I'd expect any player on £25k+ to be for sale to be honest. Just the reality of our budget now, we're a Championship club who has to do the best we can whilst paying Championship wages?

Josh has certainly got the ability. He's got a great ability to get into the right positions, whether that's by beating his man or getting himself into a goal-scoring position. Problem is his decision-making is often terrible, and his finishing is not the best.

I would've preferred us to keep hold of him, but £11m is too good for us to turn down. I probably would've accepted £6.5/7m. Obviously getting a good replacement in is very important. Marcus Maddison is certainly a good option as you say CB (8 goals and 18 assists last season is an unreal record). As I said a few pages pack as well, Jorge Grant is someone I'd love us to go for, though don't think he's the same type of player as Murphy.

I would have preferred to keep him too, the proof of our ambition this season will be if we spend any of the money though. What bugs me most though, is that I have reliable information that fans giving him endless grief was a factor in him wanting to leave. After the McNally thing over the weekend, I saw fans all over twitter gobbing off about how awful Murphy is and how we should get rid, the same fans who are a bit quiet and confused now that someone is paying 11 million for him to play in the Premier league. And the same fans, no doubt, will eventually moan at the decision to sell him.

Some people seem to have an extremely blinkered view of players. Murphy can put a boot out of place once, and theres arm flailing and eye rolling all over the stadium, Pinto can be shit for a whole game, but it's fine because he says "Pitch war" a lot on his social media. It is frankly shameful that behaviour like this has played a part in Josh wanting to leave. I don't know what it is, jealousy at a local boy come good?

I remember when we were going to be better off without Redmond.

If Josh is indeed being influenced by the crowd's reaction to him, then that is indeed out of order.

Confirmed, Josh joins Cardiff. Hopefully he'll find fans that appreciate him.

Interesting words from Webber...

The thing that is always said about young players is lack of consistency. Josh and Jacob were not consistent, as expected, as young players. As players get older you would expect them to become more consistent, that's perhaps why he felt that the feedback from the crowd wasn't always as positive as he'd like.
Gunny and Madders were inconsistent last season, but, theirs was an occasional game off rather than several games off form.

I personally wish him well in the Premier League, hope he has a great time and does well.

Spurs have just bid 15 million for Jack Grealish. Interesting on a few levels, firstly in the perceived value compared to Maddison, and also for the fact that the Pinkun were reporting that Spurs were entering the race for Maddison.

Makes you wonder what spurs valuation of Maddison is though

I saw people making comparisons on stats, appearances, experience etc, reckoning not much between them. I would have Maddison at slightly pricier, though that could well be biased!

Spurs supposedly interested in Maddison before we signed him and ever since. Feels like if they really rated him they'd have done something about it.

Would imagine the latest link has only popped up to pressure Villa. Either coming from Spurs or Grealish's agent.

Spurs bid for Grealish is a bit like when we first bid for Brady when he was at Hull. If they really want him they’ll finish up paying at least £25m
