That was my thinking until I heard numerous reports that he looked out of shape in pre-season, now I'm not so sure. I hope it was just the new shirt design making him look stocky - I don't think he managed to put the ball in the net either did he?

CanaryBoy - i wouldn't worry about that, good strikers are a breed unto themselves.. The whole time Holt was doing the biz for us the reports from training would be that he wouldn't even make the team based on his performances.

Hoops is a stocky lad, and that's going to serve him well this season, what he is carrying will naturally drop off/turn to muscle.  But he's never been less than stocky in the time i've seen him play.

I also like RvW and my heart wanted him to stay but my head questions whether he will ever be the right type of player for the English leagues. Like Torres, he may just be one of those who isn't suited to it. My other feeling is that in spite of his professional behaviour throughout, he really didn't want to stay and play in the championship. The deal is a good one, whatever happens.

Well Yellow, we might get our money back or very close to it, but i for one would have liked him to stay, just to prove the tactics last season were wrong.

I think it was a bad decision for two reasons. I think he's fundamentally a decent player and I'm certain he could have done well this season after a nasty blip in an otherwise excellent career last year. The other element that bothers me is that I would like to hold on to Leroy Fer and, given the two of them are pretty close, it may affect things with Fer. From Ricky's point of view, sticking with it would give him another crack at the Premier League if we have a decent season, and on the squad quality we have, we really should be expecting promotion this season. Anything less will be failure.

I just can't subscribe to that thought, i'm not saying i'm right, but i could imagine a situation where he has our club deciding it's best for him to go out on loan, and his advisors (Agent?) saying the same.  Basically both parties in either ear influencing him, who let's be honest are primarily concerned with his stock becoming a saleable asset again.

I believe Ricky had the opinion that he wanted to see the job through after coming back from summer break,  and show us over here what he's capable of.  Otherwise, no matter where he plays this will remain a monkey on his back that he never attempted to undo.

For me, this ties up with Adam's comment in regards to it being up to Ricky which move he makes.  It ties up to what his agent said, and it also tie up with what Ricky's posted on twitter over pre-season.

He's basically got a club on one hand who's not willing to commit to him, and agent who's warning him that a failure at this level could be hugely threatening to his career.... And thus we have the final result.  As a fan i'm gutted, from a business viewpoint where risk elements have to be reduced where possible, i can see how it makes sense.  And i can also understand that another failed season in the championship would have a major affect on his career.

However..

I fail to believe that he feels he's too good and couldn't lower himself to play championship football, it just doesn't match up with his general persona, and if true together with his agent they would've be actively engineering a move away.  Subsequently, in that situation i couldn't see us being so obliging in bending over backwards with a loan/agree to buy deal for a club like St Etienne.  We would make it clear, if you want him, show us the money or we'll make use of him.

That's my view on it, if i mull things over.
