Newcastle fan here. Pretty happy with a young promising wide player who looks like he's got good technique, a decent finish and plenty of movement. Doesn't hurt that there's been a picture of him and his brother in a Newcastle shirt (so he's totally a Newcastle fan, right?... right? Ah come on guys) I'm sure Ashley will be happy with a player with resale value.

Transfer fee aside (this market is mental) do you think he's a good signing for a side that'll likely be at the wrong end of the Premier League table for much of the season? A side that plays pragmatic, counter attack football.
He's a great young player, and this isn't a sour grapes negative, but don't expect much tracking back from him lol! He was literally nowhere this time last year, and had a great season in a side that wasn't always firing on all cylinders. The big question is will he continue to improve? And I have no answer for you, I hope so, as I'd like to see him do well. Funny thing is this time last year everyone was saying his brother was the better player, but Jacob got more opportunities when we sold Redmond, I genuinely think Josh will go on and be a better player.

I hope we have a decent sell on clause in there, because if he does continue to improve, he will be worth a lot of money.

For Newcastle it's pretty close on the 'no brainer' side of taking a punt .

With an extra £12m in the bank we'll be able to pay off Matt Jarvis.

he'll be good and pacey on the counter, can't defend and doesn't track back for anything though haha

Boro have signed Britt Assombalonga from Forest, they are going to be strong this season.

To be honest mate I don't think any of us have truly sussed this out yet, its an odd one. He started last season as being the Murphy twin that we all didn't think was quite good enough, with Josh always being the better rated one, ended the season with the roles reversed.

Jacob Murphy has obviously got something a bit special but he's still very raw and has got a lot to learn, and if he was 18 or 19 you'd bet your bottom dollar that he was heading to the top, but he is 22 and a half has basically just had one season where at times he has been superb and scoring worldies and other times when he has been completely anonymous and a borderline liability. I only went to away games last season, 5 or 6, and I didn't see him have a good game. Ask a home fan and they probably didn't see him have a bad one.

I see this £12m fee as completely fair to be honest, its like we've shared the risk here. If he irons out some of his defensive weaknesses / naivety and becomes a bit mentally stronger then he's probably a bargain for you and will win England caps. On the other hand if he doesn't improve from here then I don't know if you could really argue that he's Premier League quality, so its a weird transfer where at £12m you probably feel like you've got to have a punt at that price whilst we feel like we can't take a punt on him improving further this season in case he doesn't and then we never get an offer like that again.

I've never really been able to put my finger on him, he's got match winning goals in him and unstoppable at times but at other times he has infuriated me with his decision making and belief that he is exempt from tracking back. Best we can both hope for is that Jacob Murphy has another year of developing as a player, and Josh Murphy shows us all this season why he's historically been the better rated, then we'll both have a class Murphy  :D

That's another factor though, we can't really play two Murphy's at once because they are both so offensive and we can't really not play either one of Pritchard or Hoolahan through the middle, seen us try both Murphy's with Pritchard and both Murphy's with Hoolahan and we were just bullied for 90 minutes. So we needed to get rid of one Murphy really, otherwise one won't get the football he needs and go backwards.

Hopefully Jacob leaving allows Josh to thrive.

Obviously it's not bad business from our side but I'm a fan - I'm more interested in having a good squad and there's no doubt that losing Howson and Jacob significantly affects our starting elevens quality.

Webber and co will have to be pretty special to combat two big losses with a squad that already finished 8th and get them to at least a play off spot.

I did actually wonder whether we'd be losing Josh Murphy this summer though, because his football has been limited because of Jacob's form.

We obviously need a winger now for numbers, both hopefully Josh will make a proper breakthrough this season.

Makes you wonder whether Farke would have found Canos useful this season

Now need to buy a winger.

So is Webber is a genius or somebody who had a bit of luck and is now well above his station and thinks everything he touches turns to gold.

Because reports were that he'd slated our academy for not producing enough the other day, but if he understood the clubs history he'd know that 8 years ago we were on the brink of bankruptcy and had to take a £1m donation from a chicken farmer and beg for money from the fans....

... and in this window he has sold one of our academy products for £1m, and replaced him with another one of our academy products on a season long loan, who as things stand will be competing with another of our academy products who has had his contract extended by Webber this summer.

Today he's sold another academy product for £12.5m, who as things stand will be replaced with his twin brother who is also an academy product. And he's signed a left back of questionable quality who will be competing with another academy product who had his contract extended by Webber this summer.

So I think its a bit cheeky that he'd walk into a club with a Category 1 status academy, which his predecessors built off of the wealth created through their success, then cast a bit of shade on the record of those predecessors, a few days before selling a player for £12.5m who is the product of his predecessors reign.

Putting a few months of Moxey aside, I'm still very grateful for what McNally has done for us and Webber benefits from coming into a club which is in far far better shape than it was when McNally walked in, and he has a hell of a lot to prove before I'm going to hold him in equal esteem. He'd still have to achieve god-like status here to make me like him as much as McNally.... who put the wheels in motion on securing Cat 1 status in our very first season in the Premier League, after he'd made an excellent managerial appointing who managed to cobble together a squad for pennies without a single valuable player to sell to finance it.

I think you could quite easily argue that McNally's record of taking charge of a near-bankrupt club, taking us up two divisions to the Premier League, keeping us there for three seasons and then walking away with us having a Category 1 status academy and no debt dwarfs Webbers achievements in the game by some way, who so far has no promotions on his CV because for some strange reason he didn't fancy staying to spend £100m on quality players like Aaron Mooy and preferred to come here so he could sign a Middlesbrough reserve player instead.

Perhaps he wanted to come here because we have a Category 1 status academy (rhetorical, he actually did), which his predecessor built, because he didn't fancy trying to leave a similar legacy at Huddersfield.... well I'm glad McNally did.

Also worth noting that we actually lost a very good academy player as a result of the relegation that we saw pre-McNally, Dario Dumic, who is now having an excellent career and would actually cost a lot more to buy now than we currently appear to be willing to pay for a player.

Sorry guys but I don't buy into this personality cult, we're in Germany with half a squad, our best players are like rats jumping a sinking ship and even Farke sounds like he's pretending to be upbeat and optimistic now.

Cheers for the comprehensive reply.

Agree with the shared risk thing specifically.

Re: his defensive contribution, I'd expect Benitez is confident he can get that out of him. This is very much a Benitez buy, rather than someone Ashley is buying to sell, so I expect Rafa's done plenty of homework.

We'll have 4 wingers for next season if this Ojo transfer comes to pass. Aarons, Atsu, Murphy and Ojo. Plus Ritchie of course. Which makes me think Benitez is very much planning on counter attack down the flanks, with a mobile striker in the centre. That being the case, Mitrovic might be on his way out the door, would you be interested in the mad Serbian?

I'd snap your hand off for the mad Serbian. I rate Mitrovic really highly. Don't think he's the sort of player we'll be looking at though.

We've sold 2 players, one of which decided he wanted to go back up North before Webber arrived and another that you just said you hadn't seen have a good game for Norwich, the latter for a lot more money than his career so far suggests he's worth.

As for half a squad, we have 23 players in Germany once Jacob has gone, not counting the two that would have been there but for injuries which are obviously out of anyones hands. So 25 players. Half of whose squad?! Chelsea's?!

I know it's water under the bridge now but that's a good point, Canos would probably do well with Farke

He only scored 4 goals in 18 appearances last season, I'll be interested to see how he does this season.

There's a good young player there, I just think Farke would get the best out of him, but then it's too late anyway ?

Or an averagely okay one that was overpriced because he came from Liverpool? Who was kept out of the team because Jacob was better?

:D

It was clear that he was sulking a bit. I assume when he joined he was told / assumed that he would be starting most weeks, and he was bought on the basis of Jacob's form this time last summer. But Jacob suddenly emerged and became a far far better player than Canos. A bit of bad luck on Canos' part and perhaps poor judgement on whoever made the call that Jacob wasn't ready for the first team.

A move was the only answer for Canos.
